Xbox Cloud Gaming not working: 7 quick ways to fix it

Stuck with Xbox Cloud Gaming® glitches? We get it—there's nothing worse than gearing up for a gaming session only to hit a snag. If the Xbox® cloud gaming platform isn’t firing up as it should, we’ve got you covered.

At Asurion, our experts have the know-how to help with most tech troubles. Here's our guide on troubleshooting an Xbox Cloud Gaming app that’s not working.

What is Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Xbox Cloud Gaming (formerly known as Project xCloud) is a cloud gaming service from Microsoft® that lets you play Xbox games from cloud servers on various devices. This means you can enjoy your favorite Xbox games on your phone, tablet, or even a PC without needing a console.

Microsoft offers an iOS and Android version of the Xbox app but it only supports Xbox Remote Play (which does require a console to use). To play Xbox Cloud Gaming on an Apple® or Android™ device, you’ll need the Xbox Game Pass app. If you’re playing on your computer, you can use the Xbox app for Windows™.

Do I need to pay to use Xbox Cloud Gaming?

You’ll need the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to access Xbox Cloud Gaming, a premium service that lets you stream games to other devices without hefty downloads. For a monthly subscription, you’ll get cloud gaming, access to hundreds of downloadable games, and online multiplayer gaming.

Why is Xbox Cloud Gaming not working?

A few things can interrupt your cloud gaming experience, ranging from connectivity problems to service outages. Some of the most common reasons are network issues, service outages, compatibility problems, software glitches, and account issues.

How to troubleshoot Xbox Cloud Gaming issues

Issues with Xbox Cloud Gaming can be frustrating, especially when you're eager to jump back into your game. Use the following steps to fix any problems

Make sure your device supports Xbox Cloud Gaming

Not all devices are created equal—some may lack the hardware or software compatibility to run cloud-based games smoothly. Check the list from Microsoft to see whether your device makes the cut.

Restart your device

Sometimes, the oldest trick in the book is the best place to start. A quick restart can clear out minor software glitches hindering the app's performance.

Check your internet connection

Cloud gaming is heavily reliant on a stable and fast internet connection. Your network speed must meet the minimum requirements for Xbox Cloud Gaming. You can use an online Wi-Fi testing tool to see where your internet speeds land.

Check the gaming service for outages

Service outages can slow down gaming. Visit the Xbox status page to see if there are any alerts or maintenance activities affecting cloud services.

Update and manage your game files and apps

The Xbox app is actually two different platforms. The Xbox app for Windows allows you to update your game files. Outdated versions can lead to glitches and compatibility issues. If you’re using the Xbox app for Windows, check both your game files and the app to make sure they are current.

How to update your game files on the Xbox app for Windows

  1. Press the Start button, type “store,” and press Enter. The Microsoft Store app should open.
  2. Select Library, located on the left side of the app.
  3. Download any available game updates for the Xbox or Game Services apps by clicking Get Updates.

Update your software

Updating your software can resolve issues with Xbox Cloud Gaming, so checking for and installing them can be a quick fix.

For computers, go to Start > Settings, select Windows Update from the sidebar, then choose Check for Updates. You can use our dedicated guides for updating apps on Apple and Android devices.

Repair the Windows app

If you're still having trouble with cloud gaming on your computer, you can try repairing the Xbox app for Windows through settings.

  1. Press Windows + S to bring up the search window. Then, type “Installed apps” and press Enter.
  2. In the search bar, type “Xbox”.
  3. Click the 3-dot icon beside Xbox > Advanced Options.
  4. Scroll to the Reset section, then click Repair.
