How to share Wi-Fi passwords on iPhone and Android

Share your Wi-Fi password with a QR code 

Creating a QR code on your iPhone® or Android™ device is an easy way to share your Wi-Fi password. Once you’ve created the code, all your guests need to do is point their mobile device’s camera at the code, tap to confirm when asked if they want to join the network, and they’ll be online. How to share your Wi-Fi password on your iPhone

You can share your Wi-Fi password on your iPhone by creating a QR code, or follow these steps:

iPhone to other Apple® devices 

  1. Make sure both devices are updated with the latest software and are running macOS®  High Sierra or later. 
  2. On both devices, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth®. If either device has a Personal Hotspot turned on, turn it off.
  3. Make sure you and the person you’re sharing with have each other’s email addresses saved in your contacts. 
  4. Place the devices close to each other. 
  5. Make sure your device (the one sharing the password) is unlocked and connected to the Wi-Fi network. 
  6. On your device, open Settings > Wi-Fi, then select your network. 
  7. Tap Share Password, then tap Done
  8. The person receiving the password should get a pop-up to accept and connect on their device. 

iPhone to Android

The only built-in method for sharing your Wi-Fi password from an iPhone to Android is with a QR code. You can also show them the code on your screen and have them enter the password.

How to share your Wi-Fi password on Android 

The easiest method for Wi-Fi sharing on Android is by creating and sharing a QR code—which you can share with any type of device. Here are other ways to share:

Nearby Share

You can use Nearby Share, available on Android 12 devices and later, to share a Wi-Fi password with another Android device. 

  1. Open Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi
  2. Tap the cog icon next to the connected Wi-Fi network. 
  3. Tap Nearby Share below the generated QR code. You’ll be prompted to turn on Nearby Sharing if you haven’t done so. 
  4. When the other Android device appears in the list, tap its name to share your Wi-Fi password. 
  5. Tap Accept in the pop-up. 
  6. The other device should automatically connect to your Wi-Fi network. 

Share manually

You can also share your Wi-Fi password manually by showing someone your code on your screen.  

Locating your password

If you need help locating your password to share it manually, follow these steps:  

Find your Wi-Fi password on your iPhone

Open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the blue “i” button next to your connected network, and tap the password. Verify your identity and the password will appear. 

Find your Wi-Fi password on your Android device 

For most models, when you hit Share it will generate a QR code. The password for the Wi-Fi is in the text under the QR code.

Set up a guest network

If you want to give someone access to your Wi-Fi network without sharing your password, you can create a guest network. To set up your guest network, sign in to your router’s administrative page and follow the instructions.

Troubleshooting Wi-Fi password sharing 

Here are some tips for resolving common problems when sharing Wi-Fi passwords:

  • Restart both devices, and try to share the password again. 
  • Make sure you have the email for the person you’re connecting with in your contacts. 
  • If you can’t share your Wi-Fi password with built-in methods, have the other person enter it manually.
