Get ready for Amazon Smart Plug setup
Before you begin installing your new Amazon Smart Plug, you need an Amazon account, a strong Wi-Fi connection, and the Alexa™ app. Make sure your app is up to date.
As any smart plug guide will tell you, these plugs require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network connection—not a 5 GHz connection. The 2.4 GHz band offers better range, so the plug can connect to the Wi-Fi more reliably, even if your router is in a different room.
Keep in mind, though, that with a 2.4 GHz network, it’s still a good idea to install your Smart Plug close to the router, if possible. Plugging into an outlet with a strong Wi-Fi signal will make pairing easier.
Set up the plug in the Alexa app
The first hurdle to using your new Amazon Smart Plug is connecting it to your Alexa app. That way, you can use all its great features, including controlling the plug with your Amazon Echo™.
Follow these steps to complete your Amazon Smart Plug setup for the first time:
- Plug the Smart Plug into your preferred outlet.
- Open the Alexa app on your mobile device.
- Make sure Bluetooth and Location Services are enabled on your phone to help the Alexa app discover the Smart Plug.
- Go to Devices > + > Add Device.
- Choose Plug > Amazon.
- Scan the QR code on the back of the Smart Plug or in the Quick Start guide as directed by the app.
- Follow the in-app instructions for connecting the Smart Plug to your Wi-Fi network.
- Under Devices, select the plug, then choose the Settings gear.
- Select Edit Name.
- Give the plug a name based on what you’ll plug into it. For example, if you’re using the plug for a lamp in the living room, you might name it “Living Room Lamp 1.”
Having a specific name for the plug will make it easier to find in the app and to adjust with voice controls.
Enable and test Alexa voice controls
Once you complete the Amazon Smart AC Plug setup and see it in your Alexa app, it’s time to try out your Alexa skills.
Start by telling Alexa to turn on the plug, using the name you chose. For example, “Alexa, turn on the Kitchen Fan.”
If you already have something plugged into the Smart Plug, it should turn on with this Alexa command. You can then try telling Alexa to turn it off.
Beyond these Alexa voice controls, you can also use the Amazon Smart Plug schedule setup to get Alexa to automatically turn the plug on and off at specific times. Follow these steps:
- In the Alexa app, go to More > Routines.
- Choose the + symbol.
- Name the routine and tap Next.
- Select When this Happens > Schedule > At Time.
- Enter your desired days and times.
- Choose Add Action > Smart Home > Plugs.
- Select your Amazon Smart Plug and Power On or Power Off.
With this routine in place, your plug (and whatever you plug into it) will automatically turn on or off on the schedule you set. Make sure you consistently update Alexa so you don’t miss any security or performance upgrades.
Troubleshoot pairing and offline issues
If the plug doesn't set up with the QR code, make sure you’re in a well-lit room. Choose “Unable to set up using barcode” and complete the setup manually.
If the plug shows as offline, you may have a Wi-Fi connection issue. Try restarting your router and the plug before reconnecting it to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Restart your mobile device, too.
To reset the Smart Plug, press and hold the button on the plug for 15 seconds. Let the button go when you see a red LED light. The light will turn blue once the reset is complete. Then, register the Smart Plug in the Alexa app again.
