Roku remote not working: common fixes that actually work

⚡ Fast fix

  • Fresh batteries first. Weak batteries are still the most common culprit.
  • Check your line of sight. A blocked signal can make a working remote seem broken.
  • Try the Roku mobile app. It's a quick way to tell whether the problem is the remote or the Roku.
  • Restart the Roku. Temporary glitches can break the connection between the remote and device.

Few things make a streaming night go sideways faster than a Roku® remote that suddenly stops cooperating.

Before you start shopping for a replacement, it's worth knowing that Roku remote problems are often simpler than they look. Asurion Experts help people troubleshoot streaming devices every day, and we've found that many remote issues come down to a handful of quick fixes that take less than a minute to try.

We'll walk you through the steps we recommend, starting with the ones that solve the most problems.

Replace the batteries

We know—it sounds obvious. But weak batteries are still the most common Roku remote problem we see. They don't always fail all at once, either. More often, the remote becomes inconsistent before it stops working completely.

Swap in a fresh set of batteries before moving on. It's the quickest fix on the list and often the right one.

Make sure the Roku can actually see the remote

Depending on the type of Roku remote you're using, signal interference can play a role. We've seen situations where the Roku itself is tucked behind a TV, hidden inside a cabinet, or partially blocked by another device. The remote may still appear to work occasionally, which makes the issue even harder to identify.

Try moving closer to the Roku and make sure there's a reasonably clear path between the remote and the device. These quick checks solve quite a few issues.

Figure out whether the problem is the remote or the Roku

One of our favorite troubleshooting tricks is using the Roku mobile app. If the app can control the Roku but the physical remote can't, that's a strong sign the remote is causing the problem. If the app can't control the Roku either, the issue may be happening on the Roku side instead.

Many Roku TVs also include physical buttons somewhere on the TV itself. Depending on the model, they may be on the side, back, or bottom edge of the television. Those controls can help you figure out which device is actually being the troublemaker.

Re-pair the remote

If you're using a Roku voice remote, the connection between the remote and Roku can occasionally get interrupted. In that case, re-pairing the remote often solves the problem.

Depending on the model, you can:

  • Hold the Back and Home buttons at the same time.
  • Press the pairing button under the battery cover.

The exact method depends on the remote you're using, but reconnecting the remote is one of the quickest fixes we try after checking batteries.

If you need more detailed instructions, check out our guide on how to reset a Roku remote that's not pairing or responding.

Restart the Roku

If the remote still isn't working, it's time to give the Roku a fresh start. Temporary software glitches can interrupt communication between the remote and the Roku. Restarting clears those issues and often restores the connection.

If you can access the settings menu:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Power > System restart.
  2. Select Restart.

If you can't navigate the menus, unplug the Roku for about a minute and plug it back in.

When should you suspect a hardware issue?

One clue we pay attention to is whether multiple remotes have the same problem. If more than one remote fails to control the Roku—and the device still isn't responding after a restart—the issue may be with the Roku itself rather than the remote. At that point, you could be dealing with a problem involving the Roku sensor or another internal component.
