Smart plugs make it easy to turn a traditional appliance, like a fan, toaster oven, or humidifier, into a smart one. But if your T-P Link Kasa® Smart Plug doesn’t work, your ability to remote control shuts down. Good news: we’ve got an easy fix for that. At Asurion, we know there are no dumb questions about smart devices. Whether you’re wondering how to set up a smart home or which smart appliances are worth buying, we can help. Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to reset a Kasa smart plug.

How to reset your Kasa Smart Plug

So, you plugged your Kasa Smart Plug into an outlet, linked it to your Wi-Fi network, and set up the Kasa app on your mobile phone. Then, you plugged your bedroom lamp into the smart plug and it was working fine, but now your Kasa Smart Plug isn’t connecting. You probably just need to reset it. Here’s how:

Reset

To soft reset your Kasa Smart Plug without losing your current settings:

  1. Make sure your smart plug is plugged into a power outlet.
  2. Locate the reset button—a square button with a circle. You’ll find it on the side of the device.
  3. Press and hold the reset button for approximately 5 seconds until the Wi-Fi LED light blinks amber and green (or blue on some models).
  4. When it stops blinking, you should have a successful reset.

Factory reset

If a simple reset didn’t fix it, or you’re switching your device to a different Wi-Fi network, you’ll want to reset it to its factory default settings. Note: you’ll lose your password and settings. Here’s what to do:

  1. Make sure your smart plug is plugged into a power source.
  2. Locate the reset button—a square button with a circle, typically found on the side of the device.
  3. Press and hold the reset button until the Wi-Fi light blinks amber rapidly for about 10 seconds.
  4. Once it stops blinking, your smart plug should be reset to factory settings.
  5. Next, you'll have to go through the setup process to re-add your smart plug to the Kasa app on your mobile device. Open the app, tap Add a Device, and follow the on-screen instructions.

How to connect your Kasa Smart Plug to a new Wi-Fi

You tried resetting your device but you’re still asking, why is my Kasa Smart Plug unresponsive? You may need to change your Wi-Fi network so your smart plug can connect. It’s easier than you think. Just follow our simple guide on how to connect your smart home devices to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
