💡 Need to know

  • Gaming laptops are hard on batteries. Heat and heavy workloads can accelerate battery wear.
  • Battery drain isn't always battery failure. High-performance settings and demanding games can empty a healthy battery surprisingly fast.
  • Swelling is different. If the battery looks swollen, stop using the laptop until it's inspected.
  • Check battery health before buying parts. A battery report can help confirm the problem.

Your ASUS ROG® is built to handle long gaming sessions, heavy multitasking, and whatever else you throw at it—but none of that matters if the battery can’t keep up. If your laptop’s battery is dying faster than it should or only works when it’s plugged in, the battery could be the problem. Asurion Experts have seen all the signs (and swapped plenty of gaming laptop batteries), so we know what to look for and how to fix it. Here’s how to tell if your battery’s the problem—and what you need to know about swapping it out.

Signs your ASUS ROG laptop battery needs replacing

It’s not always obvious when your battery is the culprit, but certain warning signs can help you decide what to do next. Keep an eye out for:

  1. The battery drains much faster than it used to.
  2. The laptop only works when it’s plugged in.
  3. Windows shows a battery warning or says, “Consider replacing your battery.”
  4. The battery feels swollen, or your laptop gets unusually warm.
  5. Your device shuts off without warning, even with charge remaining.

If you notice any of these, it’s a good time to check your battery’s health so you know what comes next.

How to check your battery health in Windows

Windows doesn't provide a universal battery-health percentage for every laptop, but it does include a detailed battery report that can help you evaluate battery wear.

Generate a battery report

  • Right-click the Start button and select Terminal or Command Prompt.
  • Type: powercfg /batteryreport
  • Press Enter.
  • Open the generated battery report.

Compare the battery's Design Capacity to its Full Charge Capacity. If the current capacity is significantly lower than the original design capacity, the battery has likely worn down over time and may be approaching replacement.

How to replace your ASUS ROG laptop battery

While you could try swapping the battery yourself, ASUS ROG models aren’t exactly easy to crack open, and one wrong move could mess things up even more. If you’d rather not do it yourself, you can always schedule a repair at a nearby

uBreakiFix® by Asurion store. Our experts can take care of everything for you. If you do decide to go it alone, here are the steps:

  1. Power off your laptop and unplug all cables.
  2. Flip the laptop over and remove the screws from the back panel.
  3. Carefully pry off the panel to reveal the battery.
  4. Disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard.
  5. Remove the screws securing the battery.
  6. Lift out the old battery. If the battery appears swollen, punctured, or damaged, stop the repair and seek professional help. Damaged lithium-ion batteries can be a safety hazard.
  7. Place the new battery in the slot, secure it, and reconnect the cable.
  8. Replace the back panel and screws.
  9. Turn on your laptop and check if the battery is recognized in Settings.

Once you’re done, your laptop should run as it should again. If not, it may be time to call in a computer repair expert.
