Kindle stuck on the lock screen? Try these fixes
⚡ Fast fix
- Restart it first. A frozen lock screen is often temporary.
- Charge it longer. A low battery can make your Kindle look stuck.
- Check the cover. Some cases can press buttons or block charging.

Kindle® devices are built for calm reading, not lock screen drama. So when yours gets stuck on the screensaver, won’t wake, or keeps showing “Waking up…” without actually doing the waking-up part, it can feel like your book just slammed itself shut.
Asurion Experts help people troubleshoot tablets and e-readers all the time, and with a Kindle stuck on the lock screen, we usually start with power and restart basics before jumping to anything more serious. Here’s how to get your Kindle moving again.
Why won’t my Kindle unlock?
A Kindle may get stuck on the lock screen because of a frozen screen, low battery, charging issue, stuck power button, magnetic cover problem, software glitch, or outdated software. In some cases, the screen may look frozen even while the Kindle is still slowly restarting.
An E Ink screen can also make this confusing because they hold an image even when the device is sleeping or low on power. That means the lock screen can stay visible even when the Kindle needs a charge. Sneaky little screen.
Restart your Kindle
Start with a restart. It clears many temporary glitches without erasing your books or settings.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Keep holding it until the screen goes blank or the power menu appears.
- If the menu appears, choose Restart.
- If the screen goes blank, wait for the Kindle to restart.
- Try unlocking it again.
If nothing happens right away, keep holding the button a little longer. Some Kindle models take more time to force a restart than you’d expect.
For more reset guidance, our guide to resetting a Kindle safely explains the difference between restart, soft reset, and factory reset.

Charge your Kindle before trying again
If the Kindle battery is very low, it may not respond normally. Plug it into a working charger and let it charge for at least 30 minutes before trying another restart.
Use a known-working cable and wall adapter if you can. If the Kindle still does not respond, try a different outlet and cable. The problem may be charging, not the lock screen.
Asurion’s guide to what to do when your Kindle isn’t charging can help you rule out cable, adapter, port, and battery issues.
Remove the cover or case
Some Kindle covers use magnets to wake or sleep the device. That’s handy—until the cover gets misaligned and your Kindle thinks it should stay asleep forever. Rude, but plausible.
Remove the case or cover, then try waking or restarting the Kindle again. Also check whether the cover is pressing the power button or blocking the charging cable from sitting securely in the port.
Clean around the power button
A stuck or sticky power button can make your Kindle harder to wake. Check the button for debris, dust, or pressure from a case. Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe around it gently.
Avoid liquid cleaners near the button or charging port. Your Kindle may be low-maintenance, but it does not want a spa day in the form of moisture.
Connect to Wi-Fi and check for updates
Once your Kindle responds again, connect it to Wi-Fi and check for software updates. Updates can fix bugs that cause freezing or slow wake behavior.
If your Kindle will not connect, review Asurion’s guide to fixing a Kindle that won’t connect to Wi-Fi. A Kindle can still be used offline for downloaded books, but Wi-Fi is important for syncing, updates, and fresh downloads.
Factory reset your Kindle if it keeps getting stuck
If your Kindle repeatedly gets stuck on the lock screen after charging, restarting, and updating, a factory reset may help. This should be your last step because it removes downloaded content, settings, and the Amazon® account from the device. Your purchased books should still be tied to your account, but you’ll need to download them again after setup.
To factory reset from settings, go to Settings > Device Options > Reset. If the screen is completely unresponsive, you may need Amazon support for model-specific recovery options.

FAQ
Why won’t my Kindle unlock?
It may be frozen, low on battery, stuck in sleep mode, affected by a cover, or dealing with a software glitch. Start with a restart and a solid charge.
How do I restart a Kindle stuck on the lock screen?
Press and hold the Power button until the screen goes blank or the power menu appears. Choose Restart if you see the option.
Why does my Kindle say “Waking up” but not open?
It may be frozen mid-wake, low on battery, or stuck because of a software issue. Charge it for at least 30 minutes, then restart it.
Will restarting my Kindle delete my books?
No. Restarting does not delete your books or settings. Factory resetting does, so don’t jump there unless your Kindle is being truly stubborn.
Can a Kindle cover make the screen stay locked?
Yes. Some covers use magnets to wake and sleep the Kindle. Remove the cover and test the device again.
