Kindle not downloading books? Here's why

⚡ Fast fix

  • Check Wi-Fi first. Downloads need a working connection.
  • Sync your Kindle. Sometimes the book just needs a nudge.
  • Look at storage. A full Kindle won’t welcome new books.
  • Confirm the account. Wrong account, missing book. Classic fail.

You bought the book. You’re ready to read. Your Kindle® is ready to… stare at you with a pending download. Not exactly the cozy reading moment you had planned.

Asurion Experts help troubleshoot tablets and e-readers every day, and when Kindle books won’t download, the cause is usually one of a few things: Wi-Fi, sync, storage, account settings, or a stuck download. Here’s how to get your books moving again.

Why are my Kindle books not downloading?

Kindle books may not download because the device is offline, Airplane Mode is on, Wi-Fi is weak, the Kindle is signed in to the wrong Amazon® account, storage is full, the book is stuck in the queue, or the device needs a restart or update.

The fix depends on whether the book is missing from your library, stuck as pending, or visible but refusing to download. Start with connection and sync first—they’re the least dramatic and usually the most productive.

Check Wi-Fi and turn off Airplane Mode

A Kindle needs Wi-Fi to download books from your Amazon library. If Airplane Mode is on or the Wi-Fi connection is weak, downloads can stall.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Make sure Airplane Mode is off.
  3. Connect to your Wi-Fi network.
  4. Move closer to your router if the signal is weak.
  5. Try downloading the book again.

If Wi-Fi is the issue, our guide to fixing a Kindle that won’t connect to Wi-Fi can help you troubleshoot the network before you blame the book.

Sync your Kindle

Sometimes the book is in your Amazon library, but your Kindle has not caught up yet. Syncing forces the device to check your account and update your library.

To sync your Kindle:

  1. Go to the home screen.
  2. Tap the menu or quick settings area.
  3. Choose Sync or Sync My Kindle.
  4. Wait for the library to refresh.
  5. Try downloading the book again.

If the book still does not appear, check your Amazon account from another device to confirm the purchase or library loan is there.

Restart your Kindle

A restart can clear stuck downloads, frozen queues, and small software glitches. It will not delete your books.

  1. Press and hold the Power button.
  2. Choose Restart if the option appears.
  3. If the screen goes blank, wait for the Kindle to reboot.
  4. Reconnect to Wi-Fi.
  5. Try the download again.

Check your Kindle storage

Books are small compared with movies or apps, but storage can still fill up—especially if you download lots of audiobooks, comics, PDFs, or documents.

Look for storage settings on your Kindle and remove content you don’t need downloaded right now. Removing a downloaded book from the device does not necessarily delete it from your Amazon account. It usually stays in your library so you can download it again later.

Think of it like moving books off the nightstand and back onto the shelf. The book still exists. Your Kindle just gets breathing room.

Make sure you’re using the right Amazon account

If a book is missing completely, your Kindle may be registered to a different Amazon account than the one used to buy or borrow the book.

Check your account on the Kindle:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Your Account or registration settings.
  3. Confirm the Amazon account is correct.
  4. If needed, deregister and register with the right account.

Be careful with deregistering. It removes the account from the Kindle and may remove downloaded content from the device. If you’re setting up a Kindle again, Asurion’s guide to setting up a Kindle step by step can help.

Check whether the book is compatible or still available

Some titles may not download if there’s a licensing issue, region restriction, expired library loan, payment problem, or compatibility issue. If the book came from a library, check whether the loan expired. If you bought it, check your Amazon digital orders or content library.

If other books download normally, the issue may be tied to that specific title—not your Kindle. This is the tech equivalent of one sock refusing to come out of the dryer.

Update your Kindle software

Outdated software can cause syncing and download problems. Connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi, plug it in if the battery is low, and check for updates in settings.

If your Kindle battery drains quickly or struggles to stay powered during updates, Asurion’s guide to extending your Kindle battery life can help you keep it running longer.

Factory reset only if downloads still won’t work

If Wi-Fi, sync, storage, account checks, restart, and updates do not fix the issue, a factory reset may help. Use this as a last resort because it removes downloaded content, settings, and the Amazon account from the Kindle.

Before resetting, make sure you know your Amazon login and that your books are visible in your account library. Then follow our guide on how to factory reset your Kindle.

FAQ

Why are my Kindle books pending?

Pending usually means your Kindle is waiting on Wi-Fi, sync, storage, or Amazon account access. Start with Wi-Fi and Sync—those two fix a lot.

How do I force a Kindle book to download?

Connect to Wi-Fi, turn off Airplane Mode, sync your Kindle, then tap the book cover again. If it still stalls, restart the device.

Why is my purchased Kindle book not showing up?

You may be signed in to the wrong Amazon account, the purchase may not be complete, or the library has not synced yet. Check your Amazon content library from another device.

Can low storage stop Kindle books from downloading?

Yes. If storage is full, your Kindle may not download new books. Remove old downloads you don’t need on-device right now.

Will resetting my Kindle delete my books?

A factory reset removes downloaded books and settings from the device, but purchased books should stay tied to your Amazon account. You’ll need to download them again after setup.
