The document loader on your HP Envy (also known as the Automatic Document Feeder or ADF) lets you quickly scan multi-page documents without adding each page individually. Follow these steps to use it correctly:

Step 1: Prepare your documents

Ensure all pages are the same size and free of staples, paperclips, or anything else that may disrupt a smooth scanning process. Tap the bottom edge of the stack of papers on a flat surface, such as a desk or table, to align the pages.

Step 2: Open the ADF tray

The ADF tray is on the top of your HP Envy printer. Gently pull the tray towards you to open it.

Step 3: Load your documents

Load your documents face-up in the ADF tray, with the first page on top. Ensure the edges of the paper stack are aligned with the paper guides on the tray. This will guarantee consistent scanning of each page of your document.

Step 4: Adjust the paper guides

Adjust the paper guides inward until they gently touch the edges of the document. This further helps keep the pages aligned as they feed through the scanner.

Step 5: Start scanning

You have two options for scanning your documents. You can initiate the process directly from the printer control panel or use your HP smart app.

Using the printer control panel:

• Press the Scan button on your printer's control panel.
• Select Document Feeder as the source.
• Choose your desired scan settings. 
• Start the scan.

Using the HP smart app:

• Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
• Select your HP Envy printer.
• Choose the Scan option.
• Select Document Feeder as the source.
• Configure your scan settings.
• Start the scan.

Fan the paper

Before loading your document into the feeder, hold the papers loosely and fan through them. This helps prevent multiple pages from feeding through simultaneously, as they are less likely to stick together. 

Straighten the stack

Align the bottom edge of your multi-page document by tapping the paper stack vertically on a flat surface. This could be your desk, a chair, or even a clean floor.

Avoid overloading

Each HP Envy printer model has a particular capacity, so it’s best to check yours specifically. Exceeding the capacity can put excessive pressure on the feeder, causing misfeeds, skewed scans, and jams.

Check for obstructions 

Before loading the tray, check to ensure nothing could block the scan. Look for debris like paperclips, staples, or scrap paper. 

Fixing paper jams effectively

If your document gets jammed while scanning, there are a few key things to do:

• Locate the jam. Find the location of the jam and try to determine what caused it. A torn paper is the most likely culprit.
• Remove the paper. Remove your document and any additional paper or other debris that may have caused the jam. Do not forcefully jerk the paper out, as this could damage your document and the printer.
• Reset the printer. Once everything looks back to normal, turn your printer off and restart it before trying to scan again.
