Your kids can't stop talking about Wreckfest, a demolition derby–style racing game they want to play on their iPad®. But every time you try and download it for them, you get a message that says there isn't enough space on their device. Don't worry—there are a few easy fixes that'll have them smashing their rivals in no time.
At Asurion, we've got your tech covered—from protection for your devices to guides that help you get the most out of your favorite ones. Here's how to free up space on your iPad.
Check your iPad storage
If you’ve received the dreaded “storage almost full” warning on your iPad, start by heading to Settings > General > iPad Storage. There, you can see how much space you actually have left and what's taking up most of it.
Offload or delete unused apps
Once you know how much storage you have and what's taking up the most space, you can start making some hard decisions. We're sorry, but that language-learning app you haven't opened in months probably has to go. While you're at it, we recommend deleting any other apps you no longer use.
- Go to Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Scroll down the page to find your apps sorted by physical size, with the largest space hogs sitting at the top.
- Tap on an app you don't use often and select Offload App: This uninstalls the massive underlying app architecture but keeps its local icon and user data safe on your home screen for easy one-tap reinstallation later.
- Alternatively, select Delete App to completely wipe the application and its associated data fragments from your hard drive permanently.
Use cloud storage for photos and videos
If you don't want to permanently delete photos and videos, moving them to cloud storage can help free up space on your iPad®. iCloud® Photos is built into iPadOS and can automatically store your full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud while keeping smaller, space-saving versions on your device. Before you begin, make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi and signed in with your Apple Account.
To turn on iCloud Photos:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap Photos.
- Turn on Sync this iPad.
- Select Optimize iPad Storage.
With Optimize iPad Storage enabled, your original full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud, while your iPad keeps smaller versions that take up less space. Full-resolution files download automatically whenever you need them.
You should also make sure your iPad is being backed up regularly:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap iCloud Backup.
- Turn on Back Up This iPad.
Your iPad will automatically back up when it's connected to power, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. You can also tap Back Up Now to create a manual backup.
Keep in mind that iCloud Photos syncs your photo library across all your devices. If you delete a photo while syncing is enabled, it will also be deleted from iCloud and your other synced Apple devices.
If you want to stop syncing photos with iCloud, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos and turn off Sync this iPad.

Save photos and videos to a computer or external drive
Not into the cloud? We get it. You can free up storage by moving photos and videos to a computer or an external drive.
Move photos to an external drive
Most modern iPads support external storage devices through the Files app.
- Connect a compatible external drive to your iPad using a USB-C or Lightning adapter, depending on your model.
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap Select, then choose the photos and videos you want to move.
- Tap Share > Save to Files.
- Select your external drive from the Locations list.
- Choose a folder and tap Save.
Before deleting anything from your iPad, open a few files on the drive to make sure the transfer was successful.
Move photos to a computer
To transfer photos to a Mac® or PC:
- Connect your iPad to your computer with a USB cable.
- If prompted, tap Trust This Computer on your iPad.
- Import the photos using the Photos app on a Mac or the Photos app/File Explorer on a Windows PC.
- Verify that your photos were copied successfully before removing them from your iPad.
Once you've confirmed your files are safely stored elsewhere, you can delete them from your iPad to free up space.
Get more out of your music storage
You may not think about your "Route 66 Playlist" when you're not on the road, but thousands of downloaded songs can take up a surprising amount of storage. Here's how to free up some space:
- Open the Apple Music® app.
- Tap Library > Downloaded.
- Find the song, album, or music video you want to remove.
- Touch and hold the item, then tap Remove.
- Tap Remove Download to remove it from your iPad while keeping it in your library. Or tap Delete from Library to remove it from your library across your synced devices.
Want to free up space automatically? Turn on Optimize Storage:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Music.
- Tap Optimize Storage and choose a minimum amount of music you'd like to keep downloaded.
When storage gets low, your iPad can automatically remove downloaded songs you haven't listened to recently. The music stays in your library, and you can stream it or download it again anytime.
Check your iMessage settings
Group texts and photo sharing can quietly turn your Messages application into a double-digit gigabyte storage anchor over time.
- Navigate to Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Scroll down and click directly on the Messages app row.
- Tap into individual content directories like Videos or Photos to see a list of attachments sorted from largest to smallest.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner, highlight the giant clips you no longer need, and tap the Trash icon to delete them.
Set iMessage storage limits
If you aren't careful, those iMessage chains you've had going for years could eat up a lot of storage space. Here's how to set automatic limits for iMessage:
- Go to Settings > Messages.
- Scroll down to Message History, tap Keep Messages, and change the setting from Forever down to 1 Year or 30 Days to automatically auto-delete old text chains.
Clear your web browser cache
Your internet browser remembers what makes surfing the web easy for you. That can be helpful, but it can also take up space on your iPad.
How to clear your cache in Safari®:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Select your preferred time frame (choose All History for a maximum cleanup sweep) and confirm. (Note: This will not remove your saved passwords or browser bookmarks, but it will close out active open tabs).
If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
FAQ
Why is my iPad storage full even after I delete apps?
Deleting apps doesn't always remove photos, videos, messages, downloads, or cached data. Check Settings > General > iPad Storage to see what categories are still using space.
What's the difference between Offload App and Delete App?
Offload App removes the app itself but keeps your documents and settings so you can reinstall it later. Delete App removes both the app and its associated data.
If I delete photos from my iPad, will they stay in iCloud?
Not if Sync this iPad is turned on. iCloud Photos syncs your library across devices, so deleting a photo on your iPad also deletes it from iCloud and your other synced Apple® devices.
How much free storage should my iPad have?
There's no perfect number, but keeping at least 10–15% of your storage free can help your iPad run more smoothly and leave room for app updates, downloads, and system files.
Why does Apple Music take up so much storage?
Downloaded songs, albums, playlists, and music videos can add up quickly. You can remove downloads you don't need or enable Optimize Storage to automatically remove music you haven't listened to recently.
Will clearing Safari's cache delete my passwords?
No. Clearing Safari history and website data removes browsing data and cached files, but your saved passwords and bookmarks remain intact.
