How to find the serial and model number on your tech

From your computer to your gaming system, every device in your home has a model and serial number, which come in handy when you're filing a claim, checking warranty coverage, or searching for specifications. If you're going to sell, trade-in, or give away your device, you'll need both numbers. But where exactly are they located?

What are serial and model numbers?

Model and serial numbers are used to identify a specific product. The model number differentiates between models of devices—for example, iPhone® 13 and iPhone X. Many devices can share a model number, which means they're the same model.

But every device has its own unique serial number, sometimes abbreviated as S/N. It's like a fingerprint—the serial number matches the product to you.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your laptop

Locating your laptop's model and serial numbers is easy. You simply need to know where to look.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your MacBook laptop

  1. In the Apple® menu in the upper-left corner of your screen, choose About This Mac.
  2. In the pop-up window, you'll see the model name and serial number.
  3. If the serial number appears as a list of Xs and 0s, double-click the version number underneath “OS X" to reveal your serial number.

If your MacBook® won't start up, there are two ways to find the model and serial numbers:

  1. Look for the serial number on the bottom of your MacBook, close to the regulatory markings. You can also locate the serial number on your laptop's original product label, if you still have it.
  2. Enter the serial number into this Apple link to find your model.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your PC laptop

Probably the easiest way to find your PC laptop's model and serial number is to turn over your device and look for them underneath. If you still have the box your computer came in, you can find both numbers there too. Have Windows™ 10? You can also look up your model and serial number on your computer. Follow these simple steps.

How to find the device model number on Windows 10

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for System Information and click the top result to open the app.
  3. Click on System Summary.
  4. Look under System Model for the model number of your device.

How to find the serial number using commands on Windows 10

  1. In your search bar, type the following: cmd.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following: wmic bios get serialnumber.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. You'll see your serial number.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your TV

You can find your TV's model and serial numbers by looking at the label on the back panel of your TV or on the original packaging (if you still have it). You can also find them via the menu on your TV—the process is similar across brands, but here are a few examples.

NOTE: These steps may not work on all versions of each brand's televisions.

How to find the model and serial number on your Samsung TV

  1. On your TV remote, press the Home button to open the Smart Hub.
  2. Using the directional pad, select Settings (bottom-left corner) > Support > About This TV. On some TVs, you may need to select Contact Samsung instead of About This TV.
  3. The model and serial numbers will appear on your screen.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your LG TV

On your TV remote, press Settings (gear icon) > All Settings (three dots) > General > Devices > TV. You'll find the model and serial numbers in the TV Information menu.

You can also press the Mute button on the remote three times in a row. The model and serial numbers will appear on the screen.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your Sony TV

For TVs released in 2015 or later:

  1. On your TV remote, press the Home button.
  2. Select Settings > System Settings or Product Support.
  3. Select Customer Support or System Information.
  4. Select Product Information to view the model and serial numbers.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your tablet

No matter what kind of tablet you have, you can find the model and serial numbers on the back of your device as well as on its original packaging (if you still have it). You can also look them up on your device. Follow these steps depending on your tablet.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your iPad

  1. Tap Settings > General > About and look in the top section.
  2. If the model number has a slash in it, that refers to the part number; simply tap the part number to reveal the model number. It will be a letter followed by four numbers.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your Samsung Galaxy tablet

  1. Tap Settings > About tablet.
  2. The model and serial numbers will appear.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your Amazon Fire tablet

  1. Swipe down from the notification bar and select Settings > Device Options.
  2. Your model and serial numbers will appear near the bottom of the page.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your Sony tablet

  1. Go to the Home screen, then tap the Apps icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Tap Settings > About tablet > Status.
  3. Scroll to find the model and serial numbers.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your gaming console

Follow the steps based on the device you have at home.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your Xbox

The model number is located on the upper-right corner of the machine and consists of four digits and starts with a 1.

To find the serial number:

  1. Press the Xbox button.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
  3. The serial number appears first in the list displayed.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your PlayStation

Look on the original PlayStation® packaging or the back of the PS4 system for the model and serial numbers.

  • PS4 models CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx, and CUH-12xx: The serial number has 11 characters and is found toward the bottom left of the chassis. The model number begins with CUH followed by four numbers and a letter, and it is located on the back of the system toward the bottom of the chassis.
  • PS4 Slim models CUH-20xx: The serial number has 11 characters. To find it, turn the system over and look under the lip above the power port. The model number begins with CUH followed by four numbers and a letter. It's located on the spine of the system to the right of the power port.
  • PS4 Pro models CUH-70xx: The serial number has 11 characters. To find it, turn the system over and look under the top lip across from the system ports. The model number begins with CUH followed by four numbers and a letter. It's located on the spine of the system above the system ports.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your Nintendo Switch

The model number is located in the rear of the system, directly below the Nintendo Switch™ logo. The serial number is found on a white sticker on the side. (For the OLED version, look under the adjustable stand.) You can also follow these steps:

  1. From the Home menu, choose System Settings > System > Serial Information.
  2. The serial number will appear at the top of the list.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your Nintendo Wii

Look for the model number on the bottom of the console on a sticker near the rear. It begins with the letters WUP.

The serial number is located on the bottom of the system just below the barcode, and it starts with the letters KU followed by nine digits.

How to find the model and serial numbers on your watch

Follow the steps to find the model and serial number on your Apple Watch®.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap General> About.
  3. Scroll to see the Model, Serial Number or IMEI, and more.

If you don't have your Apple Watch on you, you can find the information on your phone.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the My Watch tab> General > About.
  3. Look for the Model Number and Serial Number.
