How to fix Google Assistant listening issues while driving
If your Google Assistant isn't listening while you're driving, it can be frustrating and possibly unsafe, especially if you try troubleshooting on the go.
But don't worry, Asurion Experts are here to help address some common reasons Google Assistant might not respond while you're driving and step-by-step solutions to them, so you have a smooth hands-free experience.
Troubleshoot unresponsive Google Assistant
This should go without saying, but we'll say it just in case: Don't troubleshoot while driving! Stay safe and keep your eyes on the road at all times. If Google Assistant doesn't respond, get to a safe place before checking to see whether your device has a strong internet connection. If you have connectivity issues, either restart your mobile network connection or your phone.
Enable microphone access
Google Assistant requires microphone access to hear your commands. On Android devices, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Permission Manager > Microphone to make sure the app is on.
Check Bluetooth connection stability
Make sure your device is paired with your car's infotainment system or Bluetooth-enabled accessory. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and car and put it into pairing mode. Navigate to your phone's Bluetooth settings and select the name of your car or device. If prompted, enter or verify the pin to finish the paring process.
If it isn't connecting, turn your Bluetooth off and then on again. Confirm that your devices are paired and connected, then restart them.
Review system requirements for best performance
You should check to see if you have the latest version of Google Assistant and are running the minimum Android or iPhone operating system versions.

Update Google Assistant and device software
You will also need the latest version of the Google Assistant app.
Make sure you're using the latest version
The latest version of the app provides access to the newest features, better compatibility across devices, and enhanced security updates. Here's how to make sure your app is up to date:
- Open the Google Play Store or Apple iTunes.
- Search for "Google Assistant."
- Tap Update if an update is available.
You should also check to make sure your device is running the latest software:
- Open Settings.
- Tap System > Software update.
- If you need to update your system, follow the on-screen instructions.
Retrain the voice model for enhanced accuracy
Through Voice Match, Google Assistant learns your voice to give you personal results. This is important if you want to use the Google text-to-speech feature.
To get the best results, you should retrain your Google Voice model whenever you ask your Google Assistant a question and notice a significant decline in its ability to recognize your voice. Here's how:
- Open the Google Home® app.
- At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initials> Assistant settings.
- Tap Hey Google & Voice Match > Other devices.
- Tap Teach your Assistant your voice again > Retrain.
Tips for effective voice training
- Make certain you are in a quiet environment.
- When given the voice prompt, speak at a natural volume and pace.
- Use clear pronunciation to help the system better adapt to your voice.
Disable conflicting voice assistants
If you have multiple voice assistants enabled on your device, this may cause conflicts.
Disable Alexa or Cortana
Voice assistants like Alexa or Cortana can interfere with Google Assistant's functionality. To disable Alexa, open the app, tap Settings > Accessibility and then turn Tap to Alexa off.
To turn off Cortana, go to your phone's Settings, search for "Cortana" or "Voice Assistant," and turn off "Hey Cortana" or "Voice Activation" on your phone, depending on your device.
Set Google Assistant as your default
You can manage most voice assistant settings through the dedicated app on your phone. To set Google Assistant as the default app, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps and choose Google Assistant as the default voice assistant.
Update your battery settings to get the most out of your assistant
Adaptive Battery and battery saver can improve your device's battery life. However, they may also interfere with the performance of Google Assistant.
So Google Assistant runs smoothly, turn off your phone's battery saver and Adaptive Battery:
- To turn off Battery Saver. Open Settings > Battery> Battery Saver > Battery Saver> Turn off now.
- To turn off Adaptive Battery. Open Settings> Battery >Adaptive Battery, then turn off Adaptive Battery.
Also, low battery levels can affect Google Assistant's performance by causing delays in response time and potential issues with voice recognition, so be sure to charge your device before driving to avoid interruptions in hands-free functionality.
