eero internet slow? Here’s how to troubleshoot

⚡ Fast fix

  • Start with a speed test. Compare speeds near the main eero and in the room that's slow.
  • Restart the network. A quick reboot often clears temporary slowdowns.
  • Move the nearest eero. Even a few feet can make a noticeable difference.
  • One device hogging the Wi-Fi? Pause large downloads or backups and test again.

Slow eero® internet has a way of making everything feel broken at once. Video calls freeze, streaming buffers, games lag, and suddenly everyone in the house is asking what's wrong with the Wi-Fi.

The tricky part is that eero isn't always the problem. Asurion Experts troubleshoot home internet issues every day, and the first thing we want to know is whether the slowdown starts with the internet coming into your house or the Wi-Fi inside it. Once you answer that question, the rest of the troubleshooting gets much easier.

Test your internet speed first

Start near the main eero—the one connected to your modem—and run a speed test on a phone or laptop using Speedtest by Ookla. Then move to the room where you're seeing slow performance and run the test again.

The results usually point you in the right direction:

  • Slow near the main eero? The issue may be your modem, internet provider, service plan, or the connection between the modem and eero.
  • Fast near the main eero but slow elsewhere? Focus on Wi-Fi coverage, placement, or interference.

Our guide to checking internet speed on any device can help you get a more accurate baseline.

Restart and update your eero

Before changing your network setup, give it a fresh start.

Unplug the modem and main eero, wait about 60 seconds, then plug the modem back in first. Once it's fully online, reconnect the main eero and wait for the network to come back before testing again.

While you're in the eero app, check for any available software updates. Updates can improve performance, stability, and compatibility, although they may take time to roll out to every network.

Improve eero placement

Mesh systems work best when each eero has a strong connection to the next one. If an eero is tucked behind furniture, blocked by thick walls, or sitting next to large appliances, it may be passing along a weaker signal than you realize.

A few placement tips that consistently help:

  • Keep eeros out in the open.
  • Place them off the floor.
  • Keep them away from large metal objects and microwaves.
  • Make sure each eero is within a reasonable range of another.
  • Position them closer to the rooms where you need the strongest signal.

If one room is consistently slow, moving the nearest eero just a few feet can sometimes make a bigger difference than buying another device.

Check what's using your bandwidth

Sometimes the Wi-Fi is working exactly as it should—it's just busy.

Open the eero app and review the devices connected to your network. Look for anything that's downloading a large game, backing up photos, streaming 4K video, or uploading security camera footage.

If performance improves after pausing one of those activities, you've found the bottleneck—not a problem with the eero network itself. If this happens regularly, it may also be worth asking whether your current internet plan matches how your household uses the internet.

Compare Wi-Fi and wired speeds

If you have a computer with an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the modem or main eero and run another speed test.

If the wired connection is also slow, the problem is probably with your modem or internet provider. If wired speed looks good but Wi-Fi remains slow, keep focusing on placement, interference, or device load.

When to contact your internet provider

If speed stays slow even when you're connected directly to the modem—or the modem frequently drops offline—the issue is probably happening before the signal ever reaches your eero network.

At that point, it's worth contacting your internet provider to check for outages, equipment problems, or service issues.

FAQ

Why is my eero internet so slow?

The slowdown could be coming from your internet provider, modem, Wi-Fi placement, interference, or heavy network usage.

How do I know if eero or my internet provider is the problem?

Run a speed test near the main eero, then compare it with a wired speed test if possible. If both are slow, the problem is likely outside your eero network.

Does restarting eero improve speed?

It can. Restarting clears temporary glitches and reconnects the mesh network.

Where should I place eero devices?

Keep them in open areas, off the floor, away from metal objects and large appliances, and close enough to maintain a strong connection to another eero.

Can too many devices slow down eero?

Yes. Large downloads, cloud backups, streaming, gaming, and security cameras can all compete for available bandwidth.
