Common LG washing machine problems and how to fix them
💡 Need to know
- Error codes are clues, not disasters: Codes like IE, OE, LE, and UE point you toward the problem instead of leaving you guessing.
- Most washer problems start with the basics: Kinked hoses, clogged filters, and unbalanced loads cause more issues than failed parts.
- A noisy washer isn't always a broken washer: Shaking, banging, or "walking" across the floor often means the load or machine needs rebalancing.
- Don't ignore leaks: A small drip can quickly become a bigger repair if a hose or door gasket is wearing out.
You power up your LG® washing machine to start a load of towels. After choosing a cycle and adding some soap, you leave it to do its job. But when you return to move your laundry to the dryer, the tub's full of water. It didn't drain, and you're stuck with a pile of dripping-wet laundry. What's causing your LG washing machine problems?
Asurion Experts keep your favorite home devices running smoothly. Whether you're dealing with an LG washer that won't drain or have a washing machine that won't start, we have a solution. Try our quick fixes to get your washer running again.
Troubleshoot an LG washer that won't drain or fill
Water problems with your washer stem from its water inlet hose or drain pump filter. Try these LG washer troubleshooting fixes to resolve the problem.
Check your hoses
An IE error code on your washer's display means that your washer can't fill the tub. This is usually due to clogged or twisted hoses.
To fix this, look at the back of your washer and verify that there are no kinks in the hoses. If you notice any twisting or curling, straighten the hose out. Also, verify that the hose is securely attached to its water supply source.
Clear the drain pump filter
If your washer displays an OE code, it usually means you have a drainage issue caused by a clogged drain pump filter or hose. Cleaning the drain pump filter can resolve the issue.
Many LG washers have a drain pump filter that's accessible from the front of the machine. You'll find it behind a panel that you can open. Take these steps to clean it out:
- Open the panel and untuck the drain pump hose from the side.
- Get an empty bowl or other vessel that can catch water.
- Remove the clip from the drain pump hose and allow the water to drain into the bowl.
- When the water stops draining, unscrew the drain pump filter. Clean and remove any debris from the filter.
- Reinsert the clean drain pump filter into the washer. Replace the clip of the inlet hose and tuck it back into the machine.
If you find a lot of debris and lint in the drain pump filter, it's likely the source of your problem. The machine should work after you clean it.

Test the drain pump
If fixing the hoses and cleaning the drain pump filter don't help, your drain pump motor may be failing. Take these steps to find out if it has an issue:
- Press Power to turn on the washer.
- Press the Spin Speed button until it displays High.
- Press Start to run the Spin Only cycle.
- Listen for a humming sound. If you hear it, the drain pump is working.
If there is no humming sound, your washer might need a new drain pump, which requires a professional repair.
What to do when your LG washer won't spin or agitate
If your washer won't spin, it may be overloaded or unbalanced. Try these tips to resolve the issue.
Redistribute clothes
The LG washer will display an LE if it's overloaded, or if it detects a foreign object (such as a coin) in the tub. To fix overloading, remove excess laundry and verify that the remaining items are evenly distributed. Then, check for coins or other items and take them out of the tub.
A UE error may display if you're running a very small load or the load is unbalanced. Redistribute the laundry so it covers all sides of the drum before restarting the cycle.
Level the machine
If your washer excessively shakes, thumps, or "walks", its legs may be unbalanced. Place a level on top of the machine to verify its level with the ground. If it's not, use pliers or a wrench to adjust the legs until they're evenly balanced.
How to stop water leaks from your LG washing machine
Small pools of water may form underneath your machine if it has a cracked or torn hose. Inspect the hoses carefully for cracks and tears and replace them if necessary.
If you have a front-load washing machine, water leaks can occur in the front door gasket. Look for tears in the rubber lining. If you notice damage, a professional can replace the gasket.
Another source of leaks is the detergent drawer. If it's not closed tightly, water may drip from it. To fix this, carefully remove the drawer and clean it using warm water. Then, reinsert it into the washer.
FAQ
Why won't my LG washer drain?
A clogged drain pump filter, blocked drain hose, or failing drain pump are the most common reasons an LG washer won't drain.
What do IE, OE, LE, and UE mean on an LG washer?
IE usually indicates a water supply problem, OE points to a drainage issue, LE often means the motor is overloaded or blocked, and UE indicates an unbalanced load.
Why is my LG washer shaking so much?
An uneven load or an unlevel washer is usually to blame. Redistributing clothes or adjusting the leveling feet often solves the problem.
Why is my LG washer leaking water?
Leaks are commonly caused by damaged hoses, a worn door gasket, or a detergent drawer that isn't fully closed or is clogged.
When should I call a professional to repair my LG washer?
If you've cleaned the filter, checked the hoses, balanced the load, and the washer still won't drain, spin, or fill—or you suspect a failed drain pump or damaged door gasket—it's time for a professional repair.
