Why your Amazon Smart Plug isn't responding—and how to fix it
⚡ Fast fix
- Restart the plug. Unplug it, wait, then plug it back in.
- Use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Many smart plugs won’t set up on 5GHz alone.
- Reset last. It removes the plug from your setup.
- Still no power? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
Smart plugs are one of those devices you barely think about—until they stop responding.
When that happens, it's tempting to assume the plug has failed. More often than not, though, we're dealing with a Wi-Fi hiccup, a power issue, or a device that simply needs to reconnect.
Asurion Experts help people get their smart home devices back online every day. Here's where we'd start.
Check the outlet and device first
Before troubleshooting the smart plug itself, make sure the outlet is doing its job.
Unplug the Smart Plug and plug a lamp, phone charger, or another small device directly into the same outlet. If that device doesn't work either, the outlet—not the smart plug—is probably the problem.
If the outlet works, plug the Smart Plug back in, press the button on the side, and see if the connected device turns on.
One more thing to check: if the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, make sure the switch is on.
Restart the Smart Plug
Power cycling can clear temporary connection issues.
- Unplug the Smart Plug.
- Wait about 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Wait for it to reconnect.
- Try controlling it in the Alexa app.
- Try a voice command again.
If it reconnects briefly and then drops offline, check Wi-Fi signal and router settings next.
Make sure the plug is on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
Amazon Smart Plug setup depends on a compatible Wi-Fi connection. Many smart home devices use 2.4GHz because it reaches farther than 5GHz, especially through walls.
- If your router has separate network names, connect your phone to the 2.4GHz network during setup.
- If your router combines 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one name, move closer to the router or check router settings if setup keeps failing.
Our guide to connecting smart home devices to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi explains why this matters and how to find the right network.

Check the Alexa app
Open the Amazon Alexa app, then go to Devices > tap Plugs or All Devices. Select the Smart Plug and try toggling it on and off.
If the plug is listed twice, remove the old duplicate. If the wrong plug name is being used in a voice command, Alexa may be doing exactly what was asked—just not what was meant.
Our article on setting up an Amazon Smart Plug with Alexa walks through setup and pairing basics.
Restart the router
If the plug worked before and suddenly stopped, restart the router. Unplug it, wait about 60 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait until the Wi-Fi returns and then open the Alexa app to test the plug.
If several smart devices are offline, the router or internet connection is the more likely issue. Our guide to fixing Alexa when it won’t connect to Wi-Fi can help with broader Amazon smart home connection issues.
Check routines and groups
If the plug works in the Alexa app but not in a routine, focus on the routine.
Check:
- The routine is enabled.
- The plug name has not changed.
- The correct device is selected.
- The trigger still works.
- The scheduled time and days are correct.
- The plug is in the right room or group.
If the plug responds manually, the plug is not the main problem. The automation needs attention.
Update the Alexa app
An outdated app can cause setup, device-list, and control issues. Update the Alexa app through your phone’s app store, then restart your phone and try again.
Also check whether Alexa can control other devices. If Alexa is generally slow or unresponsive, our article on fixing Alexa when it’s not responding can help narrow that down.
Reset the Amazon Smart Plug
If the plug is still unresponsive after power, Wi-Fi, router, and app checks, reset it. Press and hold the side button for about 12 seconds until the LED blinks red and blue. After that, reconnect it in the Alexa app.
After resetting:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap the plus sign.
- Add the Smart Plug again.
- Connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Test voice and app control.
Resetting removes the plug from its current setup, so you may need to add it back to routines and groups.
