Alexa routines won't run? Try these fixes

⚡ Fast fix

  • Check that it's enabled. A routine can't run if it was accidentally switched off.
  • Test the trigger. Voice phrases, schedules, and device triggers all need to match exactly.
  • Check every device. One offline plug, light, or thermostat can break part of the routine.

Alexa® routines are supposed to handle the little things for you. So when "Good morning" gets no response—or the lights come on but the music never starts—it can make the whole setup feel less smart than advertised.

Asurion Experts troubleshoot smart home automations every day. Here's how we'd figure out whether the problem is the routine, its trigger, or one of the devices it controls.

Make sure the routine is turned on

Open the Alexa app, tap More > Routines, then select the routine that isn't working. Make sure it's enabled and quickly review the trigger and actions.

It sounds almost too simple, but routines do get switched off accidentally. If that was the problem, turn it back on and test it again.

Check the trigger

The routine can only run if Alexa recognizes what's supposed to start it.

  • For a voice routine, say the exact phrase shown in the app. Even a small wording change can keep Alexa from matching it.
  • For a scheduled routine, double-check the time, day, time zone, and AM or PM setting. If the routine starts from a sensor, camera, plug, or another smart device, make sure that device is online and responding.

Test the actions one at a time

A routine may start correctly but skip an action that no longer works.

Open the routine and review each light, plug, speaker, thermostat, scene, skill, or music service it uses. Test the problem device or service on its own. If it fails outside the routine too, you've found the issue.

If the routine relies on a third-party skill, our guide to fixing Alexa skills that stopped working can help you reconnect it.

Make sure your smart devices are online

Open Devices in the Alexa app and check the equipment used in the routine. If anything shows as offline or unresponsive, fix that device before changing the routine.

The automation may be set up perfectly—it just can't control something Alexa can't reach.

Restart Alexa and your network

If the routine looks right but still won't run, restart the Echo device and router. Unplug the Echo for about 30 seconds, then reconnect it. Restart the router, wait for Wi-Fi to return, and test the routine again.

If Alexa itself is slow, silent, or missing commands, our guide to fixing Alexa when it's not responding walks through a few additional checks.

Update the Alexa app and Echo

Install any available Alexa app update through your phone's app store. It's also worth checking that the Echo device is running current software, especially if routines started failing after other Alexa features changed.

Rebuild one stubborn routine

If other routines work normally but one keeps failing, recreating it may be faster than continuing to edit it.

Take a screenshot of the current setup, then create a new routine with the same trigger. Add one action and test it before adding the next. Keep going until you find the action or device that causes the failure.

This takes a few minutes, but it's much more useful than repeatedly shouting the same command at a speaker that has clearly chosen silence.

Remove old or duplicate devices

Alexa can get confused when an old plug, light, or device name is still saved after you replace equipment or change networks.

Open Devices and remove anything you no longer use. If two devices have nearly identical names, rename them so Alexa can tell which one belongs in the routine.

Reset the Echo only as a last resort

A factory reset usually isn't necessary for one broken routine. It removes the Echo's setup and means reconnecting it to Wi-Fi and your account.

We'd only consider it if the Echo itself has broader problems and restarting, updating, checking devices, and rebuilding the routine haven't helped. Our guide to resetting Alexa on an Amazon Echo explains the difference between a restart and a factory reset.

FAQ

Why won't my Alexa routine run?

The routine may be disabled, the trigger may not match, or one of its devices or actions may be offline.

Why does my Alexa routine only work sometimes?

Intermittent routines usually point to Wi-Fi, device availability, schedules, or a third-party service.

How do I test an Alexa routine?

Test the trigger first, then run each action or device separately to find what isn't responding.

Why does Alexa say a device is unresponsive?

Alexa can't reach it. Check its power, Wi-Fi connection, app, and device status.
