Acer Chromebook won’t turn on: where to start

⚡ Fast fix

  • Leave it plugged in. A deeply drained Chromebook battery may need several minutes before showing signs of life.
  • Try a hard reset. Hold Refresh, then tap the Power button.
  • Look for signs of life. Lights, fan noise, or keyboard backlighting can point to a screen issue instead of a power issue.
  • Still nothing? Try a different charger before assuming the Chromebook is dead.

An Acer Chromebook™ that won't turn on doesn't always mean something has failed.

We've seen plenty of Chromebooks come back to life after sitting on the charger a little longer than expected. Other times, the Chromebook is actually running, but the screen is the real problem. That's why we don't jump straight to "it's broken." We pay attention to the clues the Chromebook is giving us first.

Asurion Experts help our millions of customers with all of their tech care needs. Here's where we'd start.

Why won't my Acer Chromebook turn on?

Most Chromebooks that won't turn on come down to one of three things: the battery is completely drained, the Chromebook isn't charging properly, or the system has simply stopped responding. Hardware failures happen, but they're much farther down our list.

Step 1: Give the battery time to recover

Chromebooks behave a little differently than many laptops when the battery is completely drained.

We've seen Chromebooks sit on the charger for several minutes before the first charging light or battery icon appears. That delay makes a lot of people think the Chromebook isn't working when it simply needs more time to recover.

Instead of unplugging it after a minute or two, connect it to a known-good charger and let it charge for a while.

While you wait, look for:

  • A charging light.
  • Screen activity.
  • Keyboard backlighting.
  • Fan noise.

Even one of those signs tells us the Chromebook is getting power.

Step 2: Try a hard reset

If the Chromebook still won't respond after charging, the next thing we'd try is a hard reset.

On most Acer Chromebooks:

  1. Press and hold the Refresh key.
  2. Tap the Power button.
  3. Release both buttons and wait a few seconds.

Some models instead respond to holding the Power button for about 10 to 15 seconds.

If the Chromebook powers back on afterward, it's worth checking for ChromeOS updates before getting back to work. Updates often include fixes for stability issues that can help prevent repeat problems.

To check for updates:

  1. Select the clock in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select About ChromeOS.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install any available updates, then restart the Chromebook.

Step 3: Rule out a screen problem

A Chromebook that's powered on and a Chromebook that's completely dead can look surprisingly similar.

If you see charging lights, hear the fan running, or notice the keyboard lighting up, the Chromebook may actually be on. At that point, the display becomes the more likely suspect.

If you have an external monitor available, connect it and see whether the Chromebook displays an image there. That can quickly tell you whether you're dealing with a display issue instead of a power issue.

Step 4: Try a different charger

If nothing has happened yet, don't overlook the charger itself.

Faulty charging cables and power adapters are one of the most common reasons a Chromebook appears completely dead. Before assuming there's a problem with the Chromebook, try charging it with another compatible charger that you know works.

If it starts charging with the second charger, you've found the problem.

When it's probably a hardware problem

Some problems simply can't be solved with software.

If the Chromebook has visible damage from a drop or liquid spill, or it powers on but still won't display anything—even on an external monitor—those are strong signs you're dealing with a hardware issue.

The same goes for a Chromebook that stays completely unresponsive after spending time on a known-good charger. At that point, the problem is much more likely to be the battery, motherboard, or another internal component than a software glitch.

FAQ

Why won't my Acer Chromebook turn on even when it's plugged in?

If it stays completely unresponsive after charging and trying a hard reset, the charger or hardware may be the issue.

How long should I charge a dead Chromebook before turning it on?

Give it several minutes. A deeply discharged battery may not show signs of life right away.

How do I hard reset an Acer Chromebook?

Hold the Refresh key, tap the Power button, then release both. Some models use a 10–15 second press of the Power button instead.

How do I know if my Chromebook has a screen problem?

If you see lights, hear the fan, or the keyboard lights up, the Chromebook may be running even though the display isn't.

When should I repair my Acer Chromebook?

If it still won't respond after charging, resets, and trying another charger—or it has drop or liquid damage—it probably needs professional repair.
