An Xbox controller blinking typically indicates a connection problem between the controller and the console. Here are some common reasons why your controller may be flashing and not connecting:

• Battery issues. Low or incorrectly installed batteries can prevent the controller from maintaining a stable connection.
• Syncing problems. Issues with syncing can occur if you’ve used the controller with another Xbox or if there is interference from other wireless devices.
• Firmware updates. Outdated firmware can disrupt the connection between the controller and the console.
• Hardware malfunctions. Physical or internal damage can cause the lights to flash as a sign of connection problems.

How to fix an Xbox controller that’s blinking

Now that we've identified possible reasons why your Xbox controller might be blinking and not connecting, let's explore some ways you can fix this issue and get your controller back in sync with your console.

Check the batteries

Weak or improperly installed batteries are a frequent cause of a blinking controller. Replacing or correctly installing the batteries can quickly solve this issue.

1. Turn off the console.
2. Open the battery compartment on the back of the controller.
3. Replace the old AA batteries with new ones—and make sure to insert them correctly. If you’re using a rechargeable battery pack, try AA batteries or another battery pack unit.
4. Secure the battery cover, and see if the controller connects without blinking.

Reset the controller

A reset can fix various controller issues, including blinking, by restoring the device to its default state and allowing it to establish a fresh connection with the console.

1. Hold down the Xbox symbol until the controller turns off.
2. Remove the batteries for a few minutes. Then, reinsert the batteries.
3. Press the Xbox symbol again to turn on the controller.

Resync the controller

An out-of-sync controller will try to reconnect, flashing its lights to alert you to the problem. Here’s what to do to reestablish the connection:

1. Turn on your Xbox console.
2. Press and hold the Pair button ( 3 semicircles) on the front of the console until the Xbox button begins flashing.
3. Press and hold the Pair button on the top of your controller until the Xbox button on the controller starts to flash more rapidly.
4. Then, wait for a few seconds. If the lights stabilize, the controller has reconnected.

Update the firmware

Firmware issues can interfere with communication between your controller and console. Updating the firmware can solve these problems and stop the blinking indicator.

1. Connect your controller to the Xbox console with a USB cable.
2. Press the Xbox symbol, then select Settings > Devices & connections > Controllers & headsets or Accessories, then select your controller.

Select “…” to check the current firmware version for your controller. If an update is available, choose Update, then select the most recent Firmware version and follow the on-screen prompts to install it.
