Turn off predictive text in keyboard settings

You can disable typing suggestions and adjust many other typing preferences for your iPhone in keyboard settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your phone.
  2. Go to General > Keyboard.
  3. Tap off Predictive Text.

You’ll see a list of settings that apply across all keyboards, including Predictive Typing, Auto-Correction, and Auto-Capitalization.

When you make changes to these settings, they apply to all apps on your phone, including Messages, Mail, and Notes.

Reset keyboard dictionary

Your iPhone keyboard learns from your typing behavior. Its suggestions are based partly on what you’ve typed before.

If you’re still getting suggestions you don’t want after turning off predictive text, try resetting your keyboard dictionary:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Tap Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.

This resets your keyboard to its original settings, before any learned behavior, custom words, or shortcuts were added.

Hide the QuickType bar while typing

Turning off predictive text also hides the gray QuickType bar that appears above your keyboard. Disabling this bar helps eliminate distractions while typing and gives you more screen space.

If you want to hide the keyboard entirely, swipe down from the middle of the screen or tap the keyboard dismiss button when available.

Why you may still see suggestions after turning it off

Even after turning off predictive text, you may still see some autocorrect suggestions. This could be due to residual cache or third-party keyboards.

Try these fixes:

  • Restart your iPhone.
  • Recheck your settings to confirm Predictive Text and Auto-Correction are turned off (gray = off).
  • Test typing in multiple apps to see if the issue is isolated to a specific one.

If predictive text still appears, contact Asurion for expert help.

What happens when predictive text is disabled

Once you disable predictive text, you won’t see any word suggestions while typing. Some users may find typing slower at first.

If you keep Auto-Correction on, your phone will still replace misspelled words automatically. You can tap an autocorrected word to view and revert to your original spelling.

If you decide you miss predictive typing, simply turn it back on at any time under Settings > General > Keyboard.
