If you’ve ever left home and couldn't remember whether you closed the garage door or just want to make your new home a little more convenient, a smart garage door controller might be the thing for you. A smart garage door controller can put those worries to rest and add a layer of convenience to your daily routine.

At Asurion, our experts have the know-how to help with most tech—including your garage controller. Whether you're looking to boost home security or simply enjoy the perks of home automation, here’s our guide to setting up a smart garage door controller.

What is a smart garage door controller?

A smart garage door controller connects to your garage door opener, allowing you to operate your garage door remotely from your smartphone, tablet, or even via voice commands with smart assistants like Amazon™ Alexa™ or Google Assistant®.

Look for top smart garage door controllers like the Chamberlain MyQ Smart Garage Control and the LiftMaster MyQ Smart Garage Control. Both use the MyQ smart technology app to connect to your garage. For the best integration with your other smart devices and assistants (like Siri®, Google®, and Alexa™), opt for either the Tailwind iQ3 Smart Automatic Garage Controller PRO or the Nexx Smart Wi-Fi Garage Door Controller.

Do I need a smart garage door opener to use it?

You don't necessarily need a smart garage opener to use a smart controller. Many smart controllers are designed to work with a wide range of traditional garage door openers.

How does it work with my current garage door?

This setup doesn't replace your current garage door opener—it extends its capabilities, making it accessible and manageable via internet-connected devices.

To get the most out of your smart garage door controller, you’ll want to be sure it's compatible with your existing opener. It connects directly to the opener's control terminals and, once linked to your Wi-Fi, allows remote operation through its app. This setup enables remote control, scheduling, real-time alerts, and integration with other smart home devices for full automation.

How to connect a garage door opener

Transforming your garage into a smart access point adds convenience and security to your home. Follow these steps to set up your smart garage controller with little to no fuss.

1. Check the compatibility

Because you’re connecting separate devices, you’ll want to double-check the compatibility between the controller and the garage door opener before starting the installation.

2. Check your Wi-Fi strength

To use your smart garage door controller, you need a robust Wi-Fi signal in your garage. Aim for at least two bars of signal strength. If your signal is weak, consider enhancing it by moving your router closer, creating a wireless mesh network, or using a Wi-Fi extender.

You can check your internet speeds with an online speed test tool to better assess the needs of your home network.

3. Set up the controller

Mount the unit near your garage door opener using your chosen smart garage controller’s manual. You can attach most units using screws or adhesive strips provided in the package.

You’ll also want to set it up within range of your Wi-Fi router to ensure a strong connection.

4. Download the app

Next, download the app associated with your smart garage door controller from the App Store® or Google Play®.

If required, create an account and follow the app’s instructions to add your new controller to your profile. This will typically involve scanning a QR code on the device or manually entering the device’s serial number.

5. Connect to Wi-Fi

After setting up your account and connecting your smart garage controller, connect the device to your home Wi-Fi network. Use the app’s on-screen prompts to enter your Wi-Fi password and select your home network.

If the controller struggles to connect to your Wi-Fi, try moving your router closer to the garage or using a Wi-Fi extender to strengthen the signal.

6. Customize Settings

With the hardware in place and connected, the final piece of the puzzle is setting up the smartphone app to control your garage door remotely. Once connected, you can set up custom alerts and schedules and even integrate with other smart devices.
