Don’t worry. Setting up your Kindle is simple, and you’ll be reading in just a few minutes. Whether it’s your first e-reader or an upgrade, here’s exactly how to set up your Kindle the right way.
What you need before you start
Before turning it on, make sure you have:
- Your Amazon account login
- A Wi-Fi connection
- Your charging cable (in case the battery is low)
If your Kindle doesn’t power on right away, plug it in and let it charge for at least 15 minutes.
How long does Kindle setup take?
Most people complete setup in under 10 minutes. The longest step is usually entering your Wi-Fi password and Amazon login.
How to set up your Kindle for the first time
Follow these steps:
- Press and hold the power button until the screen lights up.
- Select your preferred language.
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network.
- Sign in with your Amazon account.
If you purchased your Kindle from Amazon and it was linked to your account, it may automatically register once connected to Wi-Fi. After signing in, your device will sync with your Amazon library. Any eBooks you’ve purchased should appear in your library shortly.
How to register your Kindle later (if needed)
If you skipped registration or need to register a different account:
- Tap the top of the screen to open the menu.
- Select Settings.
- Tap Your Account.
- Choose Register or Sign in.
If you’re setting up a used device, you may first need to deregister it. Here’s how to reset a Kindle if it’s still linked to someone else’s account.
Download books to your Kindle
Once your Kindle is connected and registered:
- Go to your Library.
- Tap a book cover to download it.
You can also send books from the Amazon website or Kindle app, and they’ll sync automatically.
If you don’t see your purchases, tap Sync Your Kindle in Settings to refresh your library.
Adjust basic settings
Before you start reading, you might want to personalize your Kindle:
- Brightness: Swipe down from the top to adjust the light level.
- Font size and style: Open a book, tap the top of the screen, then select Aa to change text size and layout.
- Dark Mode: Available on supported models under Settings > Device Options.
Small tweaks can make long reading sessions much more comfortable.
Set up parental controls
If the Kindle is for a child:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Parental Controls.
- Set a password and customize restrictions.
You can also create a child profile using Amazon Kids+ if you subscribe to it. Read more options in this parent's guide to Amazon Parent Dashboard.
