Summarizing web pages in Safari using Apple Intelligence
There’s a new Safari® feature called Highlights that makes it easier to get the information you need from a website —fast. Rather than searching for a phone number or reading an entire article, this Apple Intelligence® – powered tool will pull the details out immediately.
Asurion is tech’s best friend. From device repairs to advice on Safari, we’ve got your back every step of the way. Here’s how to make the most of Safari Highlights.
What is Safari’s summarization feature?
Safari summaries are generated by Highlights, a new feature that’s powered by the proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) from Apple®, Apple Intelligence. It’s only available on iOS® 18, iPadOS® 18, and macOS® Sequoia for now, and it works pretty simply. For instance, when browsing information on a website—say, an article on a news blog— important details can get lost in the text. But now you can click or tap the white- or purple-sparkled Highlights icon in the Safari browser, and a small window will pop out and summarize everything you need. It can also pull up location or contact information for businesses.
Like all AI tools, Highlights is still experimental with wider support expected soon. At the moment, it’s only available in U.S. English and on select webpages.
How to turn on the Safari summarize feature
Highlights is on by default for MacOS, but you have to turn it on for iOS and iPadOS. Before getting started, be sure your device is updated to the latest version of Safari and that your iPhone®, iPad, or Mac® is running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia, respectively.
There are two ways to turn on Safari’s summarize feature for iOS and iPadOS:
- Activate in Safari. Open a webpage in Safari. In the web browser, you may see an option to Turn On Highlights. Tap that message to start.
- Activate in Settings. Visit Settings > Apps > Safari. Under Privacy & Security, switch on Highlights.
If you want to turn off Highlights on MacOS, you'll have to turn off Apple Intelligence.
