Roomba not connecting to Wi-Fi? How to fix it

⚡ Fast fix

  • Make sure your Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz—most Roombas won’t connect to 5GHz.
  • Restart the Roomba and your router—it clears common pairing glitches.
  • Reconnect it in the iRobot app and re-enter your Wi-Fi password carefully.
  • Still not showing up? Reset the Roomba and set it up like it’s brand new.

When life gets hectic, you can count on your trusty Roomba® to sweep up pet hair and spirit away all the crumbs from your late-night snack session. But if your Roomba is not connecting to Wi-Fi, you can't communicate with it using your phone. And that means you can't tell it to zip around while you're at work or focus on your kid's even messier-than-usual bedroom.

There are a few things that can cause Roomba connection problems, including network changes and software glitches. At Asurion, we help you get the most out of your smart home devices, whether you're shopping for a smart home hub, building your smart home checklist, or looking for a guide to Roomba. Here's what to do about your iRobot® Roomba not connecting to Wi-Fi.

Reconnect through the iRobot Home app

Most Roomba models need a 2.4 GHz network, which offers a longer range than 5 GHz networks. This connection lets your vacuum stay connected as it roams around your entire home, even with walls between it and the router.

If your Roomba stops connecting through Wi-Fi, you may be able to get it back online with the iRobot Home app. Here's how:

  1. Open the app on your smartphone and tap Product Settings.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi Settings > Reconnect or change Product Wi-Fi.
  3. Enter your Wi-Fi password.

Make sure you choose the right network during the Roomba app setup. Some routers have a guest network operating on the 2.4 GHz band, while others offer dual-band capabilities with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

If your Roomba smart home setup keeps failing, try clearing the app cache to clear out corrupted data. For Apple® devices, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings and tap General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Choose the iRobot app.
  3. Tap Clear cache or Reset cached data.

It's a similar process for Android™ devices:

  1. Open Settings and tap Apps.
  2. Pick the iRobot app and tap Storage > Clear Cache.

Can Roombas connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Some newer models are compatible with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. However, most older Roombas will only run on 2.4 GHz. For example, if your iRobot Roomba 675 or i3 Roomba is not connecting to Wi-Fi, double-check that you're using a 2.4 GHz network.

Restart your Roomba and router

If your Roomba won't connect to Wi-Fi after you use the app, try restarting the vacuum or the router itself to refresh the network connection.

Turn the Roomba on and off

To reset the Roomba's Wi-Fi connection, take the robot off the dock and press the Power button for 10 to 20 seconds. The vacuum will play a tune and flash a white light when it resets. Turn it back on by holding the Power button for three seconds again.

Reset the router

Resetting the router is another common robot vacuum Wi-Fi fix. It can repair glitches, such as slowdowns caused by too many connected devices or outdated Roomba router settings.

Follow these steps:

  1. Unplug your router for 30 to 60 seconds.
  2. Plug it back in and switch it on.

Check the signal

Still not working? The Wi-Fi signal strength also affects the Roomba. Try moving the router and vacuum closer together. Be aware of appliances and walls that can interfere with the signal. If your Roomba only works when it's near the router, a Wi-Fi extender could also help it stay connected as it trundles from room to room.

Fix problems after network changes

If anything changes with your router, you'll probably need to fix Roomba Wi-Fi issues. Here are a few iRobot Wi-Fi troubleshooting tips.

Reconnect to the router

If you have a new router or changed your password, you'll need to go through the Roomba network setup again. Here's how:

  1. Open the iRobot app.
  2. Put the Roomba on the dock and plug it in.
  3. Follow the in-app prompts to turn on Bluetooth.
  4. Tap the three lines and tap Add your product. The app will automatically search for nearby devices.
  5. Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter the Wi-Fi password.

Update firmware

Sometimes, a Roomba won't connect because of a software bug. Open the app store on your phone and search for the iRobot app. If there's an update available, install it.

To make sure your Roomba is also running the latest version, follow these steps:

  1. In the iRobot app, tap More > Settings.
  2. Tap About (robot name) and look for pending updates.

Do a factory reset

If none of these steps work, you can always perform a factory reset on your Roomba. This step erases all your data, so only use it if everything else has failed. In the app, all you need to do is tap Product Settings > About (robot name) > Remove Device from Account.
