Understand what’s causing your iPhone voicemail issue

If voicemail isn’t working on an iPhone®, there are usually two reasons: voicemail isn’t set up correctly, or new messages aren’t coming through.

Start by calling the iPhone from another phone. If voicemail doesn’t pick up, the voicemail setup may not be complete.

If voicemail is already set up but messages are missing, the issue may be with the carrier. Check for a temporary service outage with the mobile provider.

A full mailbox can also block new messages. Delete old voicemails that are no longer needed to free up space.

Sometimes the problem is a temporary Phone app issue. Restart the iPhone to clear minor bugs, then check for a software update by going to Settings > General > Software Update and installing the latest version of iOS.

It also helps to know how visual voicemail works. iPhones use visual voicemail, which shows messages in a list so users can play, delete, or save them in any order. This is different from traditional voicemail, which requires dialing in and listening to messages one at a time.

Check voicemail, call, and network settings

Set up voicemail in the Phone app

If voicemail isn’t working on an iPhone®, it may not be set up yet.

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap the Voicemail tab.
  3. If voicemail isn’t set up, select Set Up Now.
  4. Create a voicemail password if prompted.
  5. Choose the default greeting or record a custom greeting, then select Save.

Review call and voicemail settings

Incorrect call settings can prevent voicemail notifications from showing.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Phone.
  2. Turn off Silence Unknown Callers if it’s enabled.
  3. Check Blocked Contacts. Calls from blocked numbers go straight to voicemail without notifications.
  4. Select Notifications > Sounds.
  5. Make sure a ringtone is selected and adjust Haptics so incoming calls are easier to notice.

Turn off call forwarding

If call forwarding is enabled, calls may be sent to another number instead of voicemail.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Phone.
  2. Tap Call Forwarding.
  3. Make sure call forwarding is turned off.

Reset network settings

Network issues can interfere with voicemail delivery.

  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.

This won’t erase personal data. It only resets Wi-Fi, cellular, and Bluetooth® settings to their defaults.

When to contact your carrier for voicemail help

If you’ve tried everything else and your voicemail still isn't working on your iPhone, it may be time to contact your phone carrier. The voicemail issues may not be with your phone but with the carrier. System-wide failures or password resets may prevent you from accessing your messages until the carrier fixes the issue.

Even if the issue is specific to your phone, your carrier may be able to help you reset your voicemail and get it up and running properly. Call your carrier directly to speak to the customer service team about your voicemail issues.

FAQ

Why is my iPhone voicemail not showing new messages?

This can happen if voicemail isn’t fully set up, your mailbox is full, or there’s a temporary carrier issue.

Why does my iPhone go straight to voicemail?

Call forwarding, Do Not Disturb, Silence Unknown Callers, or weak signal can all cause calls to skip ringing.

Will resetting network settings delete my data?

No. It only resets Wi-Fi, cellular, and Bluetooth settings—not photos, apps, or messages.

When should I contact my carrier about voicemail?

If voicemail won’t activate, won’t reset, or still doesn’t work after troubleshooting, the issue may be on your carrier’s end.
