Types of RAM compatible with HP Spectre x360

DDR4 stands for Double Data Rate 4 Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory. Some very early Spectre x360 models might use DDR3L, so double-check your model. 

SODIMM stands for Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module, the essential form factor for Spectre x360 RAM upgrades. These compact sticks of memory used in laptops are noticeably different from larger DIMMs used in desktop computers.

Step-by-step guide to upgrading HP Spectre RAM 

We recommend leaving an HP laptop memory upgrade to the pros since it requires opening up the computer. If you choose to go it alone, here are steps to help guide you through updating the RAM in your Spectre x360.

Step 1: Prepare your tools

Most Spectre x360 models use small Phillips-head screws. Use the right screwdriver to ensure you don't strip the screws, which can make them difficult to remove later.

Most importantly: ensure the new RAM is compatible with your Spectre x360 model.

Step 2: Prepare for the upgrade

Anytime you update your HP laptop, it's important to first back up your computer.

After backing up your computer, shut it down—don't just close your laptop so it goes into sleep or hibernate mode. Completely shut down your computer before you open the back.

Unplug the AC adapter from your laptop entirely.

To ensure you aren't carrying any static electricity, discharge any static by lightly tapping the side of the laptop case—if it's metal—with your finger or wear an antistatic wrist strap. This prevents your body from acting as a static electricity source, which could damage your laptop's internal components.

Step 3: Disassemble your HP Spectre x360

The Spectre x360 usually has several screws securing the back panel. Some of these may be hidden under rubber feet or stickers. 

Carefully remove the screws using your Phillips-head screwdriver, store them safely in a small container for later use, and lift the panel away from the laptop.

Step 4: Install the new RAM

First, find the memory slots. They're usually near the center of the motherboard under a protective cover. 

Press the clips holding the RAM outwards to allow the modules to pop up at an angle. Then carefully pull the existing RAM out of the slots.

Hold the new RAM module to align the notch on it with the notch in the memory slot. This will ensure you insert it correctly. Push the RAM into the slot at a slight angle until it is fully inserted. 

Now, press the RAM down until you feel a snap from the clips on both sides of the module. Once you hear the snap, the module is installed correctly. 

Step 5: Reassemble the HP Spectre x360

Start by replacing any protective covers or shields around the RAM itself. Then align the bottom panel carefully and press down firmly until you feel it snap back into place. Take the stored screws and screw them back in.
