How to reset a Fire TV Cube

Reset a Fire TV Cube

The Amazon® Fire TV Cube™ is a hub for all your media streaming activities. With its voice-assisted controls and hands-free capabilities, it's no wonder people enjoy it as much as they do. But if your Fire TV Cube starts acting up, it may put a damper on your latest binge fest. No worries—a reset may be all you need to get it working again.

Asurion Experts help you get to the bottom of your tech issues—fast. Here's how to reset the Fire TV Cube without fuss.

Soft reset for Fire TV Cube

A soft reset won't erase your device's settings. It's the best option to try if the Fire TV Cube starts glitching or won't respond to your commands. There are two ways to do a soft reset: via the power adapter or the device's Action button.

Power adapter

Unplug the Fire TV Cube from its wall outlet. Wait for ten seconds and plug it back in. After it restarts, try using the device like you normally do.

Action button

A Fire TV Cube has two Action buttons. One is on the device itself, and the other is on the remote. To initiate a soft reset, press and hold the Action button on the Fire TV Cube or its remote for at least ten seconds. It will shut off. Press the Action button again to restart it.

Hard reset for Fire TV Cube

A hard reset restores the device to its factory settings. It’s necessary if issues persist after a soft reset, or if you plan to sell or give away the device.

Remote buttons

If your device isn't responding to voice commands or menu selections from the remote’s settings, try this: press and hold the Volume Down and Mute buttons on the remote until the Fire TV Cube flashes blue. Once the reset’s done, you can use the remote to restore your settings.

Settings menu

If your device responds normally, initiate a factory reset through the settings menu:

  1. Press the Home button on the Amazon Fire TV Stick remote.
  2. Select Settings from the available options on your screen.
  3. Select My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults.
  4. Select Reset
  5. Wait for the Fire TV Cube to reboot.

Resetting Fire TV Cube without a remote

While a Fire TV Cube responds to voice commands, you still need a remote to handle most settings-related issues. If you've misplaced your remote, resetting the device is still possible — but you need the Fire TV app on your phone.

  1. If you don't already have it, download the Fire TV app to your smartphone.
  2. Connect your smartphone to the same Wi-Fi network as your Fire TV Cube.
  3. Open the app and select your Fire TV Cube as the device. Follow on-screen prompts to establish a connection.

With the Fire TV app open, you can use your smartphone as a remote and follow the earlier steps to initiate a hard reset. However, once the reboot completes, you can't set it back up without an actual Fire TV remote. Your smartphone isn't able to handle the setup process.

To get around this issue, consider using a Fire TV remote from another Amazon device you own. You can also purchase one from Amazon or borrow one from a friend. The remote is only necessary for setup—you can use the app as a remote for other Fire TV Cube functions.
