How to reset an ASUS router

ASUS router reset

It's early evening, and you're ready to relax. You turn on the TV with plans to stream a movie, but there's no internet connection. While the issue might be your internet provider, your router may be to blame. An easy way to check is to reset your ASUS® router.

Whether we're offering advice on picking the best Wi-Fi router or boosting Wi-Fi speed, Asurion Experts are your go-to source for tech issues. Here's how to reset an ASUS router so you can enjoy your favorite internet-connected devices.

How to soft reset an ASUS router

A soft reset may clear out any minor bugs causing internet connectivity issues. It won't erase any stored router data or impact settings, so start with it before moving on to more advanced resets.

  1. Turn the router's power off and unplug it from its power source.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the router into the power outlet and turn it back on.
  4. Allow two minutes for the router to fully reboot before checking internet connections.

How to hard reset an ASUS router

If the first two solutions don't resolve your connectivity issue, try a hard reset.

  1. Turn off the router and locate the WPS button.
  2. Press and hold the WPS button as you power the router on.
  3. Release the WPS button when the power lights start flashing.
  4. Wait for the router to automatically reboot.

There may be slight differences to these steps depending on what ASUS router you're using. The device's user manual can provide further instructions for hard resets.

How to factory reset an ASUS router

If a hard reset doesn't resolve the issue, try a factory reset. This type of reset restores the ASUS router to its out-of-the-box settings. You'll need to reconfigure the router to connect to the internet and create a new administrative password afterward.

There are two ways to perform a factory reset. Use the first if you remember your ASUS username and password and can navigate to the ASUS web interface.

Method one:

  1. Verify the router is plugged into a wall outlet. Connect a local area network (LAN) cable from the router to your computer if you require a wired connection.
  2. Turn on your computer.
  3. Navigate to http://www.asusrouter.com in your web browser. Alternatively, you may enter the router's LAN internet protocol (IP) address in the browser to view its current settings.
  4. Enter your ASUS login credentials.
  5. Click Administration > Restore/Save/Upload Setting
  6. Click the Restore button to return the device to its factory settings.

A popup button may appear asking whether you want to restore the router to its factory default settings. Click OK and wait for the restoration process to complete.

Afterward, you may use the ASUS web interface to create a new network.

Method two:

If the first method doesn't work, try restoring the router's factory settings on the device itself.

  1. Locate the RESET button on the router.
  2. Press and hold the RESET button for up to 10 seconds until the power lights begin to flash.
  3. Navigate to http://www.asusrouter.com in your computer's web browser. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the home network setup.

What to do if a reset doesn't solve your connectivity problems

Resetting an ASUS router should resolve internet connection problems. If you're still having issues, check the following:

  • Cable connections: Cords may come unplugged during the reset process. Confirm all plugs are securely attached to the router and wall.
  • Provider service: Contact your internet service provider to verify there isn't a local outage.

In most cases, resetting your router won’t affect your internet provider’s settings, but you may need to re-enter your ISP login details if required for your connection.
