You probably don’t give your refrigerator coils much thought until there’s a problem, like your fridge making a lot of noise or not being cold enough. Cleaning your refrigerator coils may help fix those issues, plus keeping the coils clean will help improve the efficiency and performance of your appliance and reduce energy costs.

Are you unsure how to go about it? Asurion Experts share their best tips on how to clean your refrigerator coils safely.

What are refrigerator condenser coils?

Refrigerator coils, also known as condenser coils, are key components of your fridge's cooling system. These coils, typically located at the back or bottom of your fridge, help cool the fridge and prevent overheating.

Why clean your refrigerator coils?

When the condenser coils are dirty, your fridge has to work overtime which can prevent it from cooling properly. Refrigerator coils clogged with loose dust and debris cause wear and tear on your appliance and will increase your energy bill. For best results, clean your refrigerator coils at least twice a year—more often if you have pets that shed.

Cleaning your refrigerator coils

Here’s how to clean the coils on your fridge so your food stays chilled and your appliance lasts as long as possible.

Unplug your refrigerator

Always unplug your fridge from the power source before cleaning your appliance to stay safe and avoid electric shock. Keep the door shut; your food can stay in place when you clean the coils.

Locate the coils

Depending on your fridge's model, find the coils at the back or underneath it. You’ll have to carefully move the refrigerator away from the wall so you can reach the coils.

Use a brush or vacuum cleaner

Remove the underplate or back plate from your refrigerator (check your owner’s manual for how to use a screwdriver to do so,) and then use a brush or vacuum to remove excess dust and dirt from the condenser coils. Don’t forget to clean the condenser fan as well. (You’ll see it near the coils.)

Wipe down the coils

After brushing or vacuuming, wipe down the coils and surrounding area with a damp cloth dipped in soap and water.

Replace the grille and plug in the refrigerator

Once the coils are clean and dry, plug your fridge back in and move it into place.
