Want to change your Android™ voicemail personal identification number (PIN)? It’s easy to do if you know your current password. But what if you forgot your voicemail PIN? That’ll take an extra step—and you’ll likely need to reset it through your cellular carrier.

At Asurion, we take care of your tech every day and work with carriers to keep your phones working at their best. We know exactly how common it is for people to call and say, “I forgot my voicemail PIN on my Android.” Don’t worry; solving this problem is easy. We’ll show you how.

What is a voicemail PIN?

Your voicemail PIN is a numerical password—typically 4 to 6 digits—that you enter on your phone to listen to your voice messages. It acts as a digital lock on your inbox. It’s important to use a secure PIN so that only you (or someone you explicitly trust) can access your private voicemail messages.

How to change your Android voicemail PIN (if you know your old PIN)

If you know your current voicemail password and just want to update it for security reasons, you can usually do it right from your native dialer. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap the More options icon (the three vertical dots in the top right corner) and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down and tap Voicemail.
  4. Tap Change PIN.
  5. Type in your current PIN and tap Continue.
  6. Enter a new PIN, tap Continue, enter the new PIN one more time to confirm, and tap OK.

How to reset your Android voicemail PIN (if you forgot it)

Forgot your voicemail PIN entirely? It happens to all of us. Because your voicemail is technically hosted by your cellular provider (not your phone), you will need to reset it through them. Here is what to do for the major networks.

Reset your voicemail PIN with AT&T

  1. Open the web browser on your Android phone or computer.
  2. Go to the AT&T® website, sign in to your account overview page, and navigate to My wireless.
  3. Scroll to the My Devices & add-ons section and select your specific phone.
  4. Select Manage my device.
  5. Under "Device options & settings," select Reset voicemail. (If you have any trouble, you can also contact AT&T customer support by phone for help.)

Reset your voicemail PIN with Verizon

  1. Open your Phone app and dial *611 on your Android phone.
  2. When prompted, provide the requested security information (like your account PIN).
  3. When the automated voice assistant asks what you’re calling about, clearly say, “Reset my voicemail password.”
  4. Follow the audio instructions to create and confirm your new PIN. (If the automated system isn't working, stay on the line to be connected to Verizon® customer service).

Other carriers

If you use T-Mobile®, UScellular®, or another carrier, you can usually reset your PIN by logging in to their mobile app, signing in to their website, or dialing 611 from your device to speak with their customer support team.

Preventing future voicemail PIN issues

When you set up your new voicemail PIN, choose a number that’s memorable to you but hard for a stranger to guess. Never use consecutive digits (like 123456), repeating numbers (like 000000), or your phone number.

FAQ

What happens if I enter the wrong voicemail PIN too many times?

Most carriers will temporarily lock your voicemail after several failed attempts. If that happens, you’ll usually need to wait a short period or contact your carrier to reset it.

Is my voicemail PIN the same as my account PIN?

Not always. Your voicemail PIN protects your voicemail inbox, while your account PIN protects your carrier account. They can be different numbers.

Why is my new voicemail PIN not working?

It may not have saved correctly, or there could be a short system delay. Wait a few minutes and try again. If it still doesn’t work, contact your carrier to confirm the reset went through.

Can someone access my voicemail without my PIN?

Not easily. Your PIN is required to access voicemail remotely. That’s why it’s important to avoid easy-to-guess numbers like 1234 or your birth year.
