7 fixes to try if your Oculus controller is not working

Oculus controller not working

Imagine being in a virtual adventure, when your Oculus® (now known as Meta Quest) controller stops connecting, leaving you stuck in the digital wilderness. Talk about game over.

Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. At uBreakiFix® by Asurion, we understand how important game time is. From casting your Oculus to any screen to repairs and protection, our experts know how to keep your tech working as it should. Here are a few tricks you can try on an Oculus controller that’s not working.

Make sure the controller is on

It might sound obvious, but the first thing you need to do is make sure your Oculus controller is on.

Restart the headset and controller

Turn off your headset and controller, then turn them back on to see if this resolves the issue. Simple, right?

Check the batteries

Make sure your batteries have enough charge and that you’ve put them in correctly. If you're using rechargeable batteries, allow them ample time to charge before use.

It’s not game over—yet

If your console stops working, we’ll handle the repairs. Make an appointment, or visit your nearest store today.

Verify the controller’s connection to the headset

Make sure the controller is properly paired and recognized by your Oculus headset.

Re-pair the controller

If the connection to the headset is the issue, try re-pairing the controller. You can do this through the Oculus app on your smartphone or the settings menu in your VR headset.

Check for updates

Make sure your Oculus headset and controller are up-to-date with the latest software. Outdated software can sometimes lead to performance issues.

To update the software from the Oculus headset:

  1. Press the Oculus button.
  2. Select Settings > About.
  3. Select Install Updates.

To update the software from the app:

  1. Open the Meta Quest™ app.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select your Oculus > More Settings.
  4. Select Advanced Settings and turn on updates.

If your Quest doesn’t have update options, that means it’s designed to update automatically.

Factory reset the headset

Consider a factory reset as a last resort. This will return your headset to its original settings and can often resolve deeper software issues. If you need guidance, check out our guide to factory resetting your Oculus (Meta) headset.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
