Nintendo Switch screen frozen? Here's how to fix it

Young boy holding Nintendo Switch that has frozen screen

⚡ Fast fix

  • The 12-second rule: Hold the physical power button down for a full 12 seconds to force the console to shut off. It’s the digital equivalent of a "hard reset."
  • Tap to restart: Give it a beat, then tap the power button once to boot it back up. Your save data will be right where you left it.
  • Update or bust: Once you’re back in, head to System Settings and run a system update. Most freezes are just bugs that a quick patch will squashing for good.

Confirm the Switch is recognizing the controller

If you're using a Joy-Con™ controller, your game might not be the issue. Make sure the controllers are properly connected and paired to the Switch. The best way to test whether the console is frozen is by trying the device in handheld mode. Doing so requires you to remove the console—with the controllers connected—from the dock.

Undock and redock your Switch

When shifting between handheld and TV mode, the Nintendo Switch will sometimes pause. Dock your device for a few minutes, then undock it and see if it'll unfreeze.

Fully charge your device

A frozen Switch could be the result of a low battery. Connect your device to the charger, and allow it to charge for a few hours before trying to start the game again.

Try a power switch reset

If your Nintendo Switch screen is frozen and can't turn off—and your console isn't working at all—you'll have to turn the device off. Here's what to do:

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds to turn off the Switch. Ignore the Power Options screen. While the device is off, check the game card and microSD card slot for dirt or dust. Wipe away dust and dirt with a soft, dry cloth if needed.
  2. Turn the device back on to test whether the screen is unfrozen.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Why is my Switch screen frozen?

Usually, it’s just a random software hiccup or a game that crashed that's causing Nintendo Switch screen issues. A super low battery or outdated software can also make the console act up and lock you out.

How do I force restart it?

Hold the physical Power button for a full 12 seconds. The screen will go dark—don't panic, that's supposed to happen. Then, just tap the power button once to boot it back up.

Will a hard reset delete my saves?

Nope! A hard reset just clears the "brain" of the console and restarts it. Your game progress, screenshots, and downloads are all totally safe.

What if the screen is just black?

Plug it into an official charger for about 30 minutes before you try the 12-second reset. If the battery is totally dead, it won't react until it has some juice.

Why does this keep happening?

You're probably due for a patch. Head to System Settings > System > System Update to grab the latest fix. If it still freezes, try popping out your microSD card—it might be corrupted.
