A broken or malfunctioning HP® laptop camera can make video calls a chore, whether they are professional meetings or personal chats. If your HP laptop camera isn’t working, don’t panic. Using Windows™ 10 and 11's built-in settings and some general checks can often bring your camera back to life.
Asurion Experts can fix almost any tech issue, whether your laptop isn't charging or you don't know how to take a screenshot. Here’s what you need to know to fix the camera on your HP laptop
Check for a physical camera cover
Before diving into more complex solutions, make sure there isn’t a simple physical obstruction preventing your camera from working. Some HP laptops come with a privacy slider or cover that can accidentally be moved. Check to confirm that the camera cover is open.
Restart your computer
Restarting your laptop can resolve many issues, including webcam problems. A simple restart can refresh the system's settings and eliminate any temporary glitches affecting the camera. Learn how to properly restart your HP laptop here.
Test the camera in different apps
Sometimes, the problem might not be with the camera but with a specific application. Test the camera in different applications like Zoom®, Skype®, or even the Camera app that comes preinstalled in Windows. If the camera works in other apps, the issue could be within the app settings.
Allow camera access in apps
Privacy settings in Windows 10 and 11 can block applications from accessing your camera for security reasons. Check that your apps have permission to use the camera. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and check the permissions for your applications.
Disable and re-enable your camera
Simply disabling and then re-enabling the camera can jumpstart it back into action.
Go to Device Manager> Cameras, then locate your webcam and select Disable device. Wait a few moments, then enable it again.
Check driver software
Device conflicts or outdated webcam drivers can cause your camera to malfunction. Open Device Manager and find your camera. Right-click it and select Update driver if a driver update is available.
For any persistent problems beyond these fixes, your HP laptop might have a hardware issue that require help from a repair pro. Don't hesitate to visit a uBreakiFix® by Asurion store near you or contact HP support.
