Before you start enjoying wireless audio on your Microsoft Surface, there are a few things you’ll want to do for a smooth setup.

Check the charge of your AirPods

To avoid interruptions during the connection process, make sure your AirPods are fully charged. You can check their battery status by checking the light on the AirPods case when you open it or, for AirPods Max, by holding them close to your connected iPhone®.

Turn on Bluetooth

Your Microsoft Surface needs to have Bluetooth® activated to connect with your AirPods. Here’s how to turn it on:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Click Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then turn Bluetooth on.

How to connect AirPods to a Microsoft Surface

Whether you have AirPods, AirPods Pro®, or AirPods Max®, you can follow these steps to pair them with your Microsoft Surface.

How to pair AirPods to a Microsoft Surface

  1. Make sure your Surface has Bluetooth turned on.
  2. Open the lid of your AirPods charging case. Then, press and hold the Setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white.
  3. On your Surface, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Click Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. Then, select your AirPods from the list of devices.

How to connect AirPods Max to a Microsoft Surface

  1. Make sure your Surface has Bluetooth turned on.
  2. Hold your AirPods Max near the device. Then, press and hold the Noise Control button until the status light flashes white.
  3. On your Surface, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Click Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. Then, select your AirPods Max from the list of devices.

Why can’t I connect AirPods to my Microsoft Surface?

Sometimes, you might encounter issues when connecting AirPods to your Surface. Here are some troubleshooting tips.

AirPods are not showing up in the Bluetooth devices list

If your AirPods don't appear in the device list, try resetting them:

  1. Place your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid, or turn off your AirPods Max.
  2. Wait 15 seconds, then open the lid or turn on your AirPods Max.
  3. Press and hold the Setup button on the back of the AirPods case or the Noise Control button on the AirPods Max, until the light starts flashing white. This should make your AirPods reappear for pairing.

AirPods are connected, but there’s no sound

Make sure the AirPods are selected as your playback device:

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar to access Sound settings.
  2. Under Output, select Choose where to play sound.
  3. Find and select your AirPods.

AirPods are having connection trouble

If you're facing connectivity issues, remove the AirPods from your Bluetooth devices list and pair them again:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Click Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Locate your AirPods in the device list, click the … icon next to them, and select Remove device.
  4. Pair them again as described above.
