Adding a Ring™ Video Doorbell to your home is a simple way to boost your peace of mind. It helps you keep track of who’s coming and going—so you’ll always know your child made it home safely—and lets you see who’s at the door before you answer. Whether it’s a delivery driver, a salesperson, or a curious neighbor, you’ll never be surprised again.

Before you can start using your camera, though, you’ll need to connect it to your Wi-Fi network.

At Asurion, we set up and fix your favorite home tech. Whether you want to add a Ring doorbell to Google Home® or show a Ring doorbell on your TV, we've got the advice you need. Here's how to make your Ring doorbell change Wi-Fi networks, so you don't miss a beat.

Change Wi-Fi on your Ring doorbell using the Ring app

Maybe you're installing a Ring doorbell for the first time, or you just set up a new router. Either way, you need to figure out how to change the Wi-Fi on your Ring video doorbell.

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Select your doorbell.
  4. Tap Device Health.
  5. Tap Change Wi-Fi Network (or Reconnect to Wi-Fi). You’ll see a warning that the device will temporarily go offline. Tap to confirm.
  6. Press the setup button on your doorbell (location varies by model).
  7. Wait for the LED to start spinning, indicating it’s in setup mode.
  8. Follow the in-app prompts to connect your phone to the temporary Ring network.
  9. Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter your password.

Once connected, the LED will stop spinning and your device will appear online again.

What happens to your saved settings when you switch to a different network?

When you update the Wi-Fi settings on your Ring device, it will briefly go offline. That's because it's not connected to the internet during the few minutes it takes you to complete the Ring doorbell network change.

However, all your previous settings will remain unchanged when you reconnect the Ring doorbell. All of your old recordings will still be there, too. It's like using the local bookstore's Wi-Fi on your smartphone while you sip coffee. Nothing changes except for where you're connected.

When you may need to reset the device

If you run into Ring device connection issues, you may need to start from scratch. Here's how to reset it:

  1. Open the Ring app > tap your doorbell > go to Device Settings > General Settings, and tap Remove This Device.
  2. Press and hold the physical setup button on the doorbell for 20 seconds, then release it.
  3. The LED light on the front will flash for about a minute. Wait until it stops and the device enters setup mode.
  4. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device > Doorbells.
  5. Scan the QR code located on your device (check under the faceplate, on the side, or on the back) or on the quick-start guide that came in the box.
  6. Add a name for your device (like "Front Doorbell") and follow the in-app prompts to get it connected to your Wi-Fi network.

This option is time-consuming, so only use it as a last resort if you can't figure out how to change Wi-Fi on your Ring doorbell.

Fixing Wi-Fi connection issues

You've carefully followed this Ring doorbell setup guide, but it's still stubbornly offline. Don't order a new device just yet. Try these Ring doorbell troubleshooting tips first:

  • Double-check your password: Make sure you’re capitalizing the correct letters and adding any special characters. If your Wi-Fi password is “GameofThronesRuLeS!,” then “gameofthronesrules!” won’t work.
  • Reset the router and modem. That could be as simple as unplugging them or holding down their power buttons for 10 seconds.
  • Check your Wi-Fi band: Most Ring devices work on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, not 5GHz. Ensure you’re connecting to the correct one.
  • Add a Wi-Fi extender: If the signal is weak, place an extender halfway between your router and the Ring doorbell to strengthen coverage.
