AirTag not updating location? Try these tips

⚡ Fast fix

  • Turn on Location Services, Precise Location, and Bluetooth.
  • Restart your iPhone to refresh Bluetooth and Find My.
  • Move the AirTag closer to your phone during pairing.
  • Replace the CR2032 battery if it’s low.

AirTags® help you find important items like your keys, wallet, or handbag by pinpointing exactly where they are. They’re only useful, though, when they display the current location—not where the item was hours or even days ago. When the location isn’t up to date, you may wonder, “Why is my AirTag location not updating?”

The delay could come down to a few different things. There might be a low signal, few nearby devices to help transmit the location, or simply a low battery.

The good news is that there are several easy fixes to get your AirTag back online and updated. Here at Asurion, we know the ins and outs of tech to help you with all your troubleshooting needs. Try these tips to fix an AirTag not updating its location.

How AirTag location updates work (and why delays happen)

Apple’s® Find My network relies on nearby anonymous Apple devices to detect the Bluetooth® signal from your AirTag and transmit its location. It’s a key part of how AirTags work, so when there are no nearby devices, you can’t get an updated location for your AirTag.

Even with devices nearby, you can still experience network delays. For example, if your AirTag is in an area with a poor signal or if something is interfering with the Bluetooth signal, you might not get an updated location right away. AirTags are most effective in areas with strong signals and a high density of devices, like cities and suburban towns.

Apple’s network will also help test if an AirTag is tracking you. In Settings, you can enable alerts to notify you if an unknown AirTag is at your current location or is moving with you.

Check iPhone settings that affect updates

When your AirTag location is not updating, your iPhone® settings may be the culprit. Try these steps to get location sharing working again:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security > Location Services. Make sure Location Services are turned on.
  3. Select Find My > Turn Precise Location on.
  4. On the Settings Home screen, make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on.
  5. Turn off Low Power Mode in the Battery section of settings.
  6. If you’re using a Focus mode, turn it off, as well.
  7. Back in the Settings Home screen, go to General > Background App Refresh. Make sure it’s turned on to keep your AirTag location data updated.

It’s also a good idea to update your iPhone if there’s an update available. Installing the new update refreshes your phone and may fix bugs or other issues that are contributing to your AirTag location issues.

Refresh the Find My app and restart connections

If an AirTag is still not updating after settings changes, treat the issue as a stale connection state. Reset the stack in this order:

  1. Force-close Find My. Swipe up from the bottom, then swipe the app preview off the screen. Reopen Find My.
  2. Restart the iPhone. This restarts Bluetooth and background services.
  3. Move the AirTag next to the iPhone. Proximity forces a fresh location handshake.
  4. Turn Airplane Mode on and off. Wait 10 seconds before turning it back off to rebuild the wireless connections.
  5. Verify network strength. Use Wi-Fi or a strong cellular signal; move closer to the router if needed.

Fixing battery and network-related issues

If you go through all these steps and your AirTags are not updating their location, the battery may be the issue.

Signs you need to replace the AirTag battery include:

  • A Low Battery notification on your iPhone from the Find My app.
  • Random periodic beeping from the AirTag.
  • Low battery status in the Find My app.

When you notice these signs, replace the CR2032 battery. To replace the battery, push down on the AirTag's back cover and twist it counterclockwise. After you remove the old battery and put the new one in with the positive side up, you should hear a chime. Line up the cover with the three slots and twist it clockwise until it stops.

If the battery is still strong, metal interference could block the AirTag from connecting properly. Try placing it away from metal to see if that helps. Make sure there are no other large obstructions between the AirTag and devices in the network. With AirTag bracelets, that obstruction could be something like a thick jacket or metal bracelets.

As a last resort, try unpairing the AirTag from your Apple ID in the Find My app, completing a factory reset, and re-adding it. You may need to contact Apple support if you've addressed all these possible causes of the connectivity issue and your AirTag still won’t update.

FAQ

Why is my AirTag showing an old location?

AirTags rely on nearby Apple devices to update location. If your AirTag is in an area with few devices or a weak signal, updates may be delayed.

How often should an AirTag update its location?

There’s no fixed interval. Location updates occur when the AirTag connects with nearby Apple devices in the Find My network.

Can Low Power Mode stop my AirTag from updating?

Yes. Low Power Mode can limit background activity, including Find My updates. Turning it off may restore real-time tracking.

How do I know if my AirTag battery is low?

You’ll see a Low Battery alert in the Find My app. You may also hear periodic beeping from the AirTag.
