Back Market, the leading global marketplace for refurbished electronics, today announced a partnership with Asurion, America’s largest tech care company, to offer customers protection plans with additional fast repair and replacement options, to help boost consumer confidence in buying and using refurbished devices. The protection plan from Asurion will complement Back Market’s existing 1-year refurbisher warranty, giving customers the ability to protect their devices for longer and for a wider range of coverage.
Back Market customers can now add Protection Plan Coverage for as little as $1.99 for two years of coverage when they buy a device on the marketplace. The protection offers additional reassurance and confidence to refurbished shoppers, often on par with options offered when buying new. Through the new Protection Plan Coverage, Back Market customers get:
- Two years of coverage for all accidents during normal use: drops, spills, and cracked screens
- An additional year of coverage for mechanical and electrical failures caused by defects in materials and workmanship, as well as normal wear and tear and power surges.
- You pay $0 for repairs on home tech and electronics, including parts, labor, and shipping. There is a service fee for mobile phone repair.
- If your device can’t be repaired, Asurion will reimburse you for the purchase price of the device (less a small service fee for some smartphones).
“Our goal at Back Market is to make buying refurbished not just a smart and safe option, but the first choice,” said Lauren Benton, Managing Director at Back Market. “This partnership with Asurion allows us to continue to strengthen the value proposition of the circular economy in electronics. With such extensive coverage available, customers have even less of a reason to buy new.”
Asurion offers affordable protection plans on a wide range of devices including phones, laptops, tablets and more. Customers can easily file a claim online and have access to the extensive Asurion repair network including friendly, in-person repair support at nearly 700 uBreakiFix® by Asurion and Asurion Tech Repair & Solutions™ stores nationwide, or mail in the device for repair instead. The repair network and support from the partnership with Asurion furthers Back Market’s mission to elongate the life of our devices, reducing the overall impact of e-waste on the planet by keeping it from the landfill for as long as possible.
“In partnership with Back Market, the Protection Plan Coverage offered by Asurion will help Back Market customers keep their tech running smoothly with fast, local repair options,” said Rob DiRocco, Senior Vice President of Client Services and Sales at Asurion. “With more than 20 years of experience, we look forward to working with Back Market to help grow customer loyalty and satisfaction with a convenient, time and money-saving service program.”
The partnership comes just in time for Summer, the time of year when phone drops, dunks and cracks skyrocket. As COVID restrictions loosen, Asurion expects the number of device mishaps to jump even more than usual given Americans’ pent-up demand for vacations and summer activities. Last summer when many people were home-bound and more socially cautious, Asurion and tech repair retailer uBreakiFix saw a nearly 90% spike in liquid-related device incidents, and a 25% increase in devices with cracked screens. And thanks to revenge travel, this summer is expected to be even more dangerous for your devices.
Protection plan coverage from Asurion will be offered on a variety of items found on Back Market’s marketplace including phones, laptops, tablets, video game consoles, cameras, drones, small appliances, desktops, audio and wearables.
